Closed Office
Features
Closed office design is the design concept of providing individual work spaces for employees either with fully
enclosed rooms or with high partitions and became the standard for most offices up until the 1960s when
the Action Office concept promoted by designer Robert Propst was introduced(Young). The closed office
concept works well for certain fields which require concentration, critical thinking, limited distractions,
confidentiality and encourages individuals to work autonomously (Open or Closed Office Layout). This
design works well for academics, law firms, executives, curators, editors and other fields which require
concentration, greater work space and storage (Marmot and Eley). The culture of the organizations which
utilize the closed office concept is one in which employees work independently and collaborate in
separate meeting or conference rooms.
Advantages to the closed office model include privacy, increases concentration and creativity, is healthier
with less exposure to many people, there is less gossip and there is a clear hierarchy which can promote
healthy competition (Sravani). Some negatives to this model include space consumption, is expensive, can
limit communication, and limits supervision.

Perspective
The open office concept originated in the early 20th century with rows of open desks occupied by clerks in an
assembly line type of fashion. In the 1950-60s designers including the Quickborner design group of Germany
and Robert Propst with Herman Miller introduced the concept of low partitions or cubicles to provide semi-
private spaces for employees to work (Musser). The open office concept works well for organizations in which
individuals work indecently but benefit from open lines of communication and in some cases supervision.
Some of the fields which utilize the open office concept include call centers, data entry, administrative
support, legal support staff and creative fields such as interior design, architectural and advertising firms
(Entis). The culture of organizations in which use the open office concept is one in which employees work
semi-autonomously but it is necessary and beneficial to have open communication and a level of team
collaboration.
Advantages to the open office model include open communication which can foster better understanding
and creativity, less need for formal meetings, better communication between all levels of employees, and is
more versatile and less expensive to construct. Negatives to the open office concept include visual and
noise distractions, lack of privacy and communicable diseases can spread quickly (Feintzeig).

The benefits of the coworking office model include a versatile and sensible use of space which provides different
zones for different activities such as shared work spaces for collaboration, offices for private meetings and areas
for employees to socialize and bounce ideas off one another (Stanger).

The company which is very much technology driven is a great example of the co-working model as the
office space utilizes various flexible spaces including private offices, meeting rooms, an open lounge, coffee
bar, a designers think tank studio and a modern lobby to provide spaces in which all employees can work
both autonomously and collaboratively. The office space is located within a converted warehouse in the
heart of San Diego and has a very young trendy vibe with large expanses of windows, exposed brick with
graffiti artwork and exposed ductwork. The office is arranged with a large open lobby and lounge area in
which several employees utilize throughout the day as most work is performed on personal laptop
computers. Adjacent to the lounge is an open space called the think tank studio and consists of rows of
desks and large tables which is where most of the design team work and develop new marketing strategies.
Each work station is equipped with two large flat screen apple computer monitors, a small file cabinet and
ergonomic Aero desk chairs by Herman Miller. The space receives a good amount of natural light from the
large north facing factory windows which have panels that are propped open throughout much of the year
to allow fresh air into the space. The studio is very bright and airy and was designed to create an
environment of excitement and spontaneous collaboration and creativity which is essential to this ever
changing industry.
To the west of the design studio are several small offices and meeting rooms which are enclosed in glass and
have sliding glass doors for acoustical privacy. Of these offices, one is for the CEO who spends much of his
time on the phone with business partners, another is for the small finance department and the third office is
for the business development team who also conducts most of their business on the phone. Next to the
offices are two meeting rooms which are also glass enclosed for acoustical privacy and are used for smaller
meetings usually with new prospective clients.
Employees interact with their work spaces differently depending upon which department they are assigned.
The design team which is the largest department spends much of their time collaborating at the large tables
within the studio using laptops and tablets . These tables are well lit with both natural light from the large
windows and rows of overhead LED lights hung from above. The design team workstations are not assigned
and used when needed and feature dual monitors, keyboard and mouse on the same surface along with a a
small file cabinet and ergonomic desk chair. There is not a great need for physical storage as this is a
technological company in which most work is saved on cloud servers. All electrical and data connections are
concealed below the rows of desks and many employees use the company Wi-Fi for their personal computers.
The finance department and business development team who have separate offices almost always keep their
doors open to the studio and have more ergonomic work stations with individual corner desks which feature
adjustable keyboard and mouse trays. These departments spend a majority of their day on their computers as
well as on the phone which necessitated the acoustical privacy of these offices. These offices also feature rows
of file cabinets for the various contracts and paperwork which their roles require.
The four pillars of ergonomics are generally well met within the space for all employees as there are Herman
Miller Aero task chairs provided for all employees along with a variety of work surfaces including work tables,
standing desks, individual desks and a bar height coffee bar which many employees use with their laptops.
Reach is addressed within the financial and business development offices with corner desks featuring
ergonomic keyboard and mouse trays but is not addressed in the design studio. All of the large apple monitors
are placed on adjustable stands to provide workers with versatile computer viewing to reduce eye strain as
well as for collaboration. The space is air conditioned, however, with San Diegos mild climate several of the
panes of the large factory windows are propped open during the day to allow fresh air into the space which
creates a very open and airy feeling.
Workplace Issues
1. Space - Several of the designers I spoke with are very pleased with the studio,
however, with a growing staff the space can sometimes become crowded which is
why many of the employees utilize the lounge and lobby areas for more personal
comfort.
2. Noise The studio which features an open plan, high ceilings and hard surfaces can
become very noisy with so many people collaborating which is why music is often
played to provide background noise to distract from the various conversations taking
place.
3. Lighting The studio is lit mostly by the natural light coming in from the large windows
on the north wall which on a clear day creates a very pleasant interior but according
to several designers can be very dismal on cloudy rainy days. There are overhead
hanging lamps but they are too few to create general ambient task lighting.
4. Comfort - Most of the designers use personal laptops for research and ideation but use
the larger monitors for web development which can be uncomfortable for the wrists
due to the single plane work surface with no keyboard or mouse trays.
5. Privacy - While most employees including the design team do not require a great
deal of privacy for their work responsibilities several mentioned that when they did
need to make phone calls it was often difficult as there are not very many acoustically
private spaces within the studio. These calls would often need to be taken within the
meeting rooms or one of the private offices.

Project Statement
Madison Hotels is a New York based luxury hotelier who provides a high-
end guest experience in the heart of Americas urban centers. Madison
Hotels is committed to creating an exciting and memorable experience
for its guests with its contemporary innovative interiors. The Madison
Hotel Group is now building their flagship hotel in the heart of Chelseas
gallery district and will include their corporate headquarters, executive
offices and co-working spaces.
The first floor which is roughly 4800 square feet will feature a large lobby
with dramatic sculptural staircase, open co-working space with seating
areas and kitchen, private offices and conference room. The second
floor which is roughly 8500 square feet will feature a welcoming
reception area along with a combination of open and closed office
spaces for the companies executive, sales, accounting and information
technology departments.

Design Solution Statement
The design of the corporate and co-working office spaces will reflect
the urban industrial chic of Manhattans Chelsea neighborhood in
which the hotel is located. The color palette of grays, rusts and neutrals
echo the colors seen within the historic brick warehouses of the
neighborhood. Exposed brick walls with faded painted signs, factory
lights, exposed bulbs, polished concrete floors and roughly hewn
beams will complete the industrial loft look. In contrast to the rough
industrial look will also be elements including glass, polished metals and
stone which will add an element of elegance and contrast. Furniture
throughout the co-working spaces will feature distressed woods with
iron accents and leather upholstery while furniture for the executive
offices will feature sleek ergonomic selections.
