Target 5G end-to-end scenario
The fifth generation of mobile technology (5G) is not only about the development of a new radio interface, but
also of an end-to-end converged network and cloud infrastructure for both traditional human-based and
emerging Internet of Things (IoT) services.
Joint Expert Group and 5G Vision Working Group Workshop, March 16th 2016, Bologna (Italy)
Integrating verticals with the 5G communications network
Verticals require to define processes (e.g. manufacturing of a product, autonomous driving, tele-surgery, etc.).
Each process is defined as a service chaining by orchestrating virtualized vertical functions (e.g., temperature
monitoring, distance or energy consumption measurement, Big data, data analysis, automated car control,
storage) and virtualized network functions (e.g., vEPC, firewall, logging, user authentication) from a repository.
Vertical requirements:
Definition of the network service, forwarding graph, and virtualized vertical function descriptors (similar to
NFV)
Joint Expert Group and 5G Vision Working Group Workshop, March 16th 2016, Bologna (Italy)
Programmability of vertical applications and network functions
In addition to MEC, NFV and C-RAN functions running on top of distributed cloud Infrastructures, verticals
require virtualized applications with different requirements in terms of end-user latency or computational
capabilities:
Vertical requirements:
API to dynamically request virtual computing and storage resources wherever are needed in order to deploy specific
virtualized vertical functions (programmability of vertical applications)
API to dynamically request the instantiation of virtualed network functions (e.g. vBBU, vEPC) from a repository
wherever are needed.
Joint Expert Group and 5G Vision Working Group Workshop, March 16th 2016, Bologna (Italy)
Differentiated E2E quality-of-service (QoS)
The heterogeneity of the applications for each vertical sets different requirements in terms of networking
resources, ranging from ultra-low latency and high reliability for mission-critical applications to high dynamic
bandwidth allocation for video surveillance.
Vertical Requirements:
API to dynamically request differentiated quality of services connections between devices, virtualized network functions
and virtualized vertical functions.

The value of experimental research:
CTTC 5G end-to-end experimental platform
CTTC is working in the development of a 5G end-to-end experimental platform for testing advanced end-to-end
IoT and mobile services.
It integrates various existing experimental facilities already available at CTTC which cover activities from the
PHY layer to the application/service layer for mobile networks.
