Statics of Rigid Bodies

PROBLEM SET 2

Random Number based on students ID Number; Ex. 2010 - 1234

RN1- number based from the fourth digit; RN1 4321
RN2- number based from the third digit; RN2 3214
RN3- number based from the second digit; RN3 2143

Round off all quantities involving RN to the nearest whole number

i.e., for example 10.9 as 10.0

Problem 1

To loosen a frozen valve, a Force F of magnitude (60 + 0.002*RN1) lbs

to the handle of the valve. Knowing that = (20 + 0.001*RN2) 0,
Mx = -61 lb-ft, and Mz = -43 lb-ft, determine and d. Use = 20o if
value will be not reasonable.

Problem 2

When a force F is applied to the handle of the valve shown, its

moments about the x and z axes are; respectively, Mx = -( 70+
0.001*RN3) lb-ft and Mz = -( 75+ 0.002*RN2) lb-ft. For d = 27 in.,
determine the moment My of F about the y axis.

Problem 3

A couple of magnitude M = 54 lb-in, and the three forces shown are

applied to an angle bracket. (a) Find the resultant of this system of
forces. (b) Locate the points where the line of action of the
resultant intersects line AB and line BC. Provide explanation if
result becomes unreasonable.
F1 = (10 + 0.0004*RN1)lbs; F2 = (20 + 0.002*RN2)lbs;
F3 = (20 + 0.002*RN2)lbs

Problem 4

A couple of magnitude M and the three forces shown are applied to an

angle bracket. Find the moment of the couple if the line of action of
the resultant of the force system is to pass through (a) point A, (b)
point B, (c) point C.

Problem 5

Four forces are applied to the machine component ABDE as shown.

Replace these forces by an equivalent force-couple system at A.

F1 = (50 + 0.0004*RN1) N; F2 = (300 + 0.002*RN2)N;

F3 = (250 + 0.002*RN2) N; F4 = (150 + 0.002*RN2)N;
