Stepping Stone Chapter 2, Choosing a curriculum orientation explained the

definition of a curriculum orientation. It is a perspective towards the knowledge and

the person itself on how they can affect classroom teaching and learning. Basically, it

directs us to styles of curriculum a school could implement in order to achieve the

objectives they have for education. There are four kinds of curriculum orientation:

First, Traditional orientation emphasizes a structured teaching, discipline of the

students and a teacher and the hard work renders for their studies. Second,

Process/Mastery orientation has their judgment of how to bring knowledge in the

classroom through what they observe on the behavior of the students and in the

society, guided thoughts they shared from fellow teachers and efficient means that

will lead them to detailed knowledge. Third, Experiential Orientation values the role

of the student in learning by means of allowing them interact in the class, discover

things by themselves and connecting what they are learning from their earlier

knowledge. Lastly, Proponents of a Christian Curriculum Orientation can be refer to

the advocates towards education from the Christian Perspective by leading students

to the truth founded by the Bible.

Upon reading this chapter, I agree with the four kinds of curriculum orientation

introduce to the readers. Moreover, the interesting part that have been said on the

following ideas of this chapter in Stepping Stone is that, Orientations are Not

Fixed. I have my three observations of why orientations are not be fixed.

To start, in order to reach the expectations in education such us leading the

students to know the truth and have learning stored in their minds, a fix orientation

will limit their capabilities to explore in their knowledge. Education need a variety of
choices on how they will present their curriculum in the classroom. God shown to us

through His creation that we can be creative. As His image bearer we are designed to

be artistic. It is only because of falleness that imprison us to one option, to make sin.

However considering ourselves as a redeem individual, we got the freedom to

creatively design the education we have as long as they are in the perspective of the

Scripture. Variation of Orientations is not bad especially when the ways we have is

still aligned with the will of God.

Also, orientation that is not fix allows teacher to choose options that could be

the best for their classroom. There are different types of classroom especially in

terms of students behavior, environment and teacher management. In the same

way, there are different orientations performed to cater the need of a classroom.

Having a one fix orientation in the curriculum compromise the teacher of how

he/she handles the class. Teachers cannot help all of the students and only the

students aligned with the orientation can be provided a help.

Lastly, there is no fix orientation because there is no fix problem and a fix

solution. If only education in the whole world has one fix and not rampant problem,

we could have one unchangeable solution. And by having a fix solution, we do not

need to plan different process/orientations. Yet, we do not have that fix happenings

in the society. Reality shows to us that this world is imperfect and nothing is stable.

We do not need to have a fix orientation because years will pass, the needs in

education will going to change again and that is inevitable. We need a curriculum

orientation that is flexible and adaptable to reality.

Therefore, the four kinds of orientation can be use and combine together to

have a better education. Moreover, we are not only block with these four types but

we are free to observe and look for other ways in order to educate children in

accordance to the plan of God.
