different distances down the tube. The rate of change of concentration of reactant A with distance is
related to the rate of reaction by

where dx/dt is the flow rate. If the flow rate is 10 ms-1, and the observation made at 1 cm ( 10-2 m)

distance from the mixing, then this distance is equivalent to a reaction time of ( 10-2/10 ) s = 10-3 s.

In this way it is possible to study reactions with half-lives of the order of milliseconds.

11.1.1 Gas reactions in flow tubes

Many gas reactions involving atoms of free radicals have been studied in flow systems. The

gases are passed at relatively low pressures ( a few torr ) at flow velocities of about 103 cm s-1

through an electric discharge. The reactions of the free radicals produced are studied at distances up
to 1 m downstream from this discharge. In this way it is possible to study free radical recombination
reactions, for the reaction of free radicals with a stable reactant molecule added to the gas stream.
Many analytical techniques have been developed such as emission and absorption spectroscopy, or
chemiluminescence, or the gas stream is leaked into a mass spectrometer or an electron spin
resonance spectrometer.
Among the most interesting experiments carried out in this field is that of a gas-phase
titration method for atoms illustrated by figure 11.2. When oxygen-free nitrogen is passed through a
discharge, nitrogen atoms are obtained.

P1,P2 = photomultipliers; F = furnace; C = cooling air jets

The atoms recombine and a straw-yellow coloured emission indicates that excited has been formed

N. + N. N 2*

A gas-phase titration to estimate the concentration of N atoms is undertaken by adding nitric oxide
downstream, when oxygen atoms are formed by

N. + NO N2 + O:

As more nitric oxide is added, a blue chemiluminescence is observed from the combination of
oxygen atoms with N atoms

N. + O: + M NO* + M

Where M represents an inert gas undissociated nitrogen in this case.

At the end point of the titration the nitric oxide has scavenged all of the N atoms and the
emission ceases. If nitric oxide is added beyond the end point, a yellow-green air afterglow from
excited nitrogen dioxide occurs due to the reaction

O: + NO NO2 * + hv

11.1.2 Flow reactors for liquid-phase reactions

Two types of flow reactors are used to study reactions in the liquid phase.

( i ) Stirred reactor
The reactants are added to a large stirred reaction vessel and the products are removed from the
vessel at the same flow rate. The analysis takes place within the reaction vessel itself or
alternatively, the products in the exit stream analysed.

( ii ) Stopped-flow reactor
The two reactants are mixed and proceed down the reactor flow tube as in figure 11.3. The flow
suddenly halted by releasing a piston which at the same time triggers a high-speed analytical device.
The reactions at a fixed poin along the tube is followed.

11.1.3 Limitations of flow methods

There are a number of limitations associated with flow methods.

( i ) Hydrodynamic or gas dynamic properties

At high mixing speeds or flow speeds, viscous losses occur and the turbulent flow result. There is
therefore an upper limit to the flow speed that can be used, and reactions with half lives of less than

10-3 s cannot be studied in flow systems.

Figure 11.3 Stopped- flow apparatus

( ii ) Pressure of the gas

In gas reactions in a flow tube low pressures are used, but the pressures must be high enough to
avoid changes in concentration occurring by diffusion rather than chemical reaction.

( iii ) Volume of reactant

A large volume of reactant in necessary. In early liquid-flow experiments with 5-mm flow tubes, 3-4

dm3 of reactants were consumed per run. The use of narrow-bore tubing has reduced the volume

required to 20-30 cm3 per run. For very expensive reactants, the use of a mechanically -operated

hypodermic syringe has reduced reactant volumes to 6 cm3 per run.

Ketika nitrogen bebas oksigen
dilewatkan melalui debit, atom nitrogen di peroleh.

Gambar 11.2 Skema diagram tabung cepat-aliran untuk titrasi gas

D = debit exciter dan debit kuarsa tabung; J1, J2 = jet untuk gas ditambahkan; P1, P2 =

photomultipliers; F = tungku; C = pendinginan jet udara

N. + NO N2 + O:

N. + O: + M NO* + M
emisi. Jika nitrat oksida ditambahkan di luar titik akhir, sebuah pijaran ekor pesawat kuning-hijau
dari nitrogen dioksida berubah terjadi karena reaksi

O: + NO NO2 * + hv

( i ) Reaktor Stirred

( i ) Hidrodinamika atau gas sifat dinamis

Figure 11.3 Aparat aliran berhenti
( ii ) Tekanan gas
