 CALCULATION EXAMPLES
1. Calculate the cost/m of half-brick wall
laid in 1:3 cement mortar which is mixed in
1m diameter mixer (5/3 type).

Price of bricks/piece = RM0.25

Bricklayer rate/day = RM60
Price of cement/bag of 50kg = RM10.50
Price of sand/m = RM30
Rental of mixer = RM300/month with
working days/month is 20
Labour rate/day = RM40
 CALCULATION EXAMPLES
2. Build up a unit rate for one-brick wall laid
in 1:1:6 cement-lime mortar which is mixed
by hand.

Price of bricks/piece = RM0.25

Bricklayer rate/day = RM60
Price of cement/bag of 50kg = RM10.50
Price of sand/m = RM30
Price of lime/bag of 10kg = RM4
Labour rate/day = RM40

3. Ditto but mixed using a 5/3 mixer.

 BRICKWORK FACINGS
In laying facing bricks, the
bricklayer lays less facing than
ordinary bricks per hour.

Brickwork facings are billed as

EXTRA OVER ordinary brickwork.

Examples of the descriptions of

brickwork facings in the BQ are as
follows:

1. Extra over ordinary brickwork in lime-
mortar for facings as specified and laid
in English bond.

2. Extra over ordinary brickwork in

cement mortar laid in stretching bond
for facing with facing bricks as
specified.

3. Extra to facing bricks as specified over

ordinary brickwork to outer walls of
hollow brickwalls.
 BRICKWORK FACINGS
This EXTRA OVER or additional coat is
made up of:

1. The additional cost of the facing

bricks over and above the cost of
ordinary bricks.
2. Any additional labour cost involved in
selecting of hand-picking the facing
bricks.
3. The additional bricklayer and labourer
hours taken in laying the facing bricks.

 POINTING BRICKWORK
Pointing the brickwork can be done in 2
ways:
1. As the laying brickwork proceeds the
joints are flushed or raked as the
bricks are laid.

2. The pointing work is done as a

separate operation before the mortar
has set this way is quite expensive
and seldom practiced.

CALCULATION EXAMPLES

A small quantity of cement mortar or

cement-lime mortar, plain or coloured is
required for the pointing work.
1. Calculate the cost per m of pointing
brickwork as the work proceed in
English bond laid in 1:3 cement
mortar.

2. Ditto but done as a separate operation

and laid in 1:1:6 cement-lime mortar.
