Lesson Plan

Day: M T W T F Date: 16/03/17 Time: 09:50 Year: 7

Learning Area: Science Topic: Magnetic Separation

Curriculum content description: (from SCSA)

Mixtures, including solutions, contain a combination of pure substances that can
be separated using a range of techniques (ACSSU113)
Students prior knowledge and experience:
Definitions of solution, solvent and solute; and soluble/insoluble
Definition of dilute, concentrated and saturated solution
Separating techniques- decanting, filtration and sieving
Identify the physical properties of substances
Magnets attract iron filings
Learning purpose:
Students are exposed to another method of separating insoluble mixtures.
Technique to separate magnetic and non-magnetic substances
Role of magnetic separation in mining and recycling
Learning objectives: Evaluation:
On completion of this lesson, students
will be able to: Students make observations
Define magnetic separation, as a during the separating chalk and
technique that separates magnetic iron experiment.
and non-magnetic substances with Students compare the properties
a magnet of chalk and iron filings.
Recognise that magnetic Listen in on discussions
separation takes advantage of Question students at the end of
differences in the magnetic lesson.
properties of minerals.
Identify that Iron, Nickel and
Cobalt are the only pure metals that
are always attracted by a magnet.
Recognise the use of magnetic
separation in mining
Understand that a temporary
electromagnet can be created by
wrapping a coil of wire around iron
and passing a current through it.
Preparation and Resources:
Arrange tables in class for 7 groups of 5 students
Element cards for random grouping x 31
Element card for table
Powerpoint- flow (on thumb drive)
Kahoot quiz- recap previous learning- find and edit pre-existing quiz on
KAHOOT
Students have iPads and/or Science exercise books and pens
Experiment- test tubes with chalk and iron filings; and magnet x 10sets
(organised by lab tech)

Catering for diversity:

Simple language for non-linguistic learners
Diagrams and videos for visual learners
Group work for discussion and sharing of ideas
Timing: Learning Experiences:

Introduction:
9:50
Open Powerpoint

Outside Classroom
9:53 Introduce myself (general chat)
Give each student an element card, eg:
Find the other students in your group that have the same card.
No more than 5 people per group
When you go inside, I want you to find the table that has the
same element card on it and sit at that table.
You will need your iPads.
Come inside
9:55
Sequence of learning experiences:
Kahoot -Quiz to recall previous knowledge - types of mixtures
10:00-10:05 and separation techniques (filtration, decanting and sieving)
GROUP WORK
10 questions- types of mixtures, separation techniques i.e. sieving,
decanting and filtration
Each group will need 1 iPad to join
Appropriate Team Name and individual names for Nicknames.
10:05-10:15 www.kahoot.it

Exploration- Test tube with chalk and iron filings

10:20-10:30 While youre having a play Id like you to think about the
properties of the two substances. What are they? What do you
observe? Have a chat to the others in your group. GROUPWORK
Compare the properties of chalk and iron filings
Lets see if we can fill up my table- each table give me one
property. INDIVIDUAL WORK -pick students who are not
willing to volunteer
Give the students a magnet
Can you separate the substances without emptying the test
10:30-10:35 tube? Use your iPads to take photos or videos of the separation
process
Why can we use a magnet to separate chalk and iron?
Powerpoint-Identify magnetic substances
10:35-10:42
Which of these will be attracted to a magnet?
Define: Magnetic separation.
Recognise: Iron, Nickel and Cobalt are the only pure metals that
are always attracted to a magnet
Role of magnetic separation:
Mining (Magnetic Separation drums)
Science exercise book/iPads (google docs):
Students copy down definition and notes off the slide and draw labelled
diagram (including labelling which container has the magnetic material
and which has the non-magnetic material)

If running out of time, students can take a photo of the magnetic

separation drum and then label it.

Role of magnetic separation:

10:43-10:45 - Recycle
- Temporary magnets- Iron can be magnetised by wrapping it
in wire and passing a current through it.

Video scrapyards- temporary electromagnet

Can anyone think of another method of creating a temporary
magnet/magnetising iron?

Lesson conclusion:
Summary: INDIVIDUAL WORK
10:45-10:50 Magnetic Separation is a technique that separates magnetic and
non-magnetic substances with a magnet
Magnetic Separation takes advantage of differences in the
magnetic properties of minerals.
Can anyone remember the three pure metals that are always
attracted by a magnet? Iron, Nickel and Cobalt
Can anyone remember how to create a temporary
electromagnet?
