Video timeline of Mavi Marmara
incident The film, produced by the
Eiland Team of Experts, breaks down
the events of the flotilla using a
timeline that alternates between 3D
models and footage captured
throughout the incident.
The events leading up to and
throughout the flotilla incident are
recounted in the video, as presented
by the team of experts led by Maj.
Gen. (res.) Giora Eiland in the IDF’s
internal inquiry.
In light of weapons smuggling
attempts, a maritime closure was
established during the 2008-2009
Gaza Operation. Under the guise of
providing humanitarian aid, a number
of ships have attempted to reach the
Gaza Strip, some permitted to enter,
while others were stopped.
Due to these attempts, the IDF
General Staff and Navy outlined
orders to prepare for future attempts
to break the closure, and in preparing
for the May 31st flotilla, the IDF
planned far in advance with extended
discussion, and various simulation
model scenarios. IDF attaches abroad
and foreign attaches to Israel were all
briefed in advance.
In addition, the Chief of the General
Staff, Lt. Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi sent a
letter to the Defense Minister and
Prime Minister emphasizing the
following:
“Cooperation between nation
ministries is required and the military
option which includes seizing,
confiscating and detaining the ship’s
activists is a last resort and at a low
priority.”
The video goes on to describe the
various ships in the flotilla and the
courses of their attempted journey to
the Gaza Strip, as well as the number
and extent of Israeli response ships,
aircraft, and absorption center for the
ships’ passengers.
The video also outlines the orders
given to the IDF soldiers boarding the
flotilla ships, including the policy of
using gradual force, and using live

weapons only in life threatening
scenarios.
The first phase of the operation: The
IDF relayed the message that the
flotilla ships were in an area of a
maritime closure, and offered the
ships to transfer their cargo from the
Ashdod Port to the Gaza Strip. The
Sofia ship did not respond at all,
while the other ships responded with
refusal and/or profanity.
The IDF forces were divided and
each group boarded a different ship.
The soldiers arrived at the Mavi
Marmara at 4:28 AM, but could not
board the ship due to metal objects
being thrown at them, and electric
buzz saws used by the demonstrators
to slice the ladders IDF soldiers
needed to board the Marmara. After
an unsuccessful attempt to board the
ship by smaller boats, a helicopter
arrived at 4:30 AM with 15 IDF
soldiers. The first rope dropped by
the helicopters was tied by the
demonstrators to the deck of the ship
in order to prevent the soldiers’
descent.
This video is in two parts. Let’s go to
the videotape.
In Part 2 of the Eiland Presentation,
the final phases of the flotilla incident
are recounted.
Soldiers that descended down the
second rope were met by 2-4
demonstrators each who wielded
knives, axes, and metal poles. The
second soldier to descend was shot in
the stomach by a demonstrator. The
soldiers who were in danger of their
lives were forced to use their live
weapons. Five soldiers were injured
by stabbing, blows and live fire by
the demonstrators. Within seconds of
boarding the ships, three soldiers
were thrown off the deck by
demonstrators. The injured were
dragged to the hull of the ship.
A reinforcement of soldiers arrives
from a second helicopter, which is
also attacked by demonstrators, and
the soldiers are met with violence
when they attempt to access the lower
deck of the ship.
At 4:46 AM a third helicopter arrives
to the Mavi Marmara, and the two
groups of soldiers combine forces on
the ship roof and descend to the other
parts of the ship, where they are also
met with lethal violence, and thus
respond with live fire.
Many of the demonstrators enter
inside of the ship as the smaller boats
arrive at the side of the ship, however
some still violently attack the
incoming boats and the soldiers
respond with live fire.
The Commander of the Special Navy
Forces boards the ship, and while
evaluating the forces, it is discovered
that three soldiers are missing. The
missing and injured soldiers are
discovered to have been abducted by
a number of violent demonstrators,
who abandon the soldiers and run
back into the ship when fired at.
Two of the injured soldiers jump off
the ship so that they can be picked up
by the IDF boats. The third injured
soldier is on the bow of the boat and
slipping out of consciousness. IDF
soldiers remaining on the boat come
to his aid.
At 5:17 AM the situation is
evaluated and some of the findings:
live fire was used by demonstrators
towards IDF soldiers who were on the
ship, including one soldier who
descended down the rope and was
shot in the abdomen. Live fire by the
demonstrators was also aimed at the
soldiers on the small Israeli Navy
boats next to the Marmara. The first
occurence of live fire was that used
by the demonstrators. In addition, a
gun with emptied magazines was
found in the hull of the ship.
IDF forces had boarded the other
ships without incident. Treatment and
evacuation was carried out for the
injured soldiers and demonstrators
alike. 38 injured were airlifted, 7 of
them soldiers.
The three soldiers who had been
attempted to be kidnapped and were
taken to the hull of the ship were
witness to an argument between the
violent demonstrators, and other
passengers of the Marmara who
asked the violent demonstrators to
cease their violent activity.
24 of the injured passengers were
diagnosed at the Ashdod Port and
treated in hospitals in Israel.
After the operation ended, the ships
arrived at the Ashdod Port
feedjournal.
accompanied by Israeli Naval forces.
An intelligence investigation
following the flotilla incident found
that 40 of the IHH activists
previously boarded the Marmara ship
from Istanbul before joining the
others.
The 8 of the 9 demonstrators killed
were members of the IHH or other
allied groups. Around half of those
killed had declared in front of their
families their aspiration to die as
martyrs (“shahids”). Footage on the
Marmara shows that the violence had
been prepared: metal poles and chains
were prepared, slingshots, buzzsaws,
gas masks, tear gas, bulletproof vests,
knives, and more. A briefing had
taken place before the IDF had
boarded the ship, with the leader of
the violent demonstrators telling the
group to attack the IDF soldiers at
any cost.
There were 718 total passengers of
the flotilla ships. Most were released
without undergoing any investigation.
The last passenger left on June 6th.

Norway: More information about the terror

Norway: More information about the
terror suspects
Norwegian papers continue to
publish new information about the
three terror suspects. Below is a
summary of several articles.
At the same time, the PST is not
officially saying anything about the
investigation. The PST denies there
was video surveillance of the
suspect’s apartments, or any
apartment, as VG Nett claimed.

The three suspects are: Shawan
Sadek Saeed Bujak Bujak (37), an
Iraqi Kurd who was arrested in
Germany, David Jakobsen (31), an
Uzbek, and Mikael Davud (39), a
Norwegian citizen of Chinese-Uighur
background. suspected of leading the
cell.

Bujak Bujak was extradited from
Germany to Norway yesterday.
Dagbladet reports that the PST, the
Norwegian Security Police,
conducted secret raids in the
suspect’s home in Grefsen. The PST
headquarters are located 500 meters
away. In a shed the security service
found a big bottle and two smaller
bottles of high-concentration
hydrogen peroxide, acetone, two
liters of liquid and flour. These are
the main ingredients for preparing the
acetone-peroxide bomb, “Satan’s
mother”.
The police also found protective eye-
wear, masks and walkie-talkies,
which they think shows the three
were going to make a bomb.

The Iraqi Kurd worked for bricklayer
Odd Bjørvik in Førde from 2001 to
2004.
His former colleagues told Dagbladet
that he was politically engaged and a
religious man, who spoke well of al-
Qaida leader, Osama bin Laden.
“When the Twin Towers in New
York were attacked, he worked by
me. Then he thought it was the
Japanese who were behind it. But he
didn’t want to say so much on
whether he was for or against it, we
were all very upset at him.”
“But half a year later he said that Bin
Laden was a good man.”
At one time the Iraqi tried to help an
Iraqi women enter Norway illegally.
“In 2003 he paid 70-80,000 kroner to
obtain a false password for an Iraqi
woman. She was stopped in Iran’s
capital, Tehran, on the way to
Europe and Bujak lost all the
money.”
Bjørvik says that Bujak smuggled
halal meat from Sweden. “He was
very concerned about halal meat. My
wife had a store and was to sell halal
meat, but it wasn’t good enough.
After that he began to smuggle halal
meat.”
He says the Iraqi lived frugally and
seldom went out. “He also had plans
to build a Muslim cemetery and
mosque in Førde.”
Bujak told Bjørvik that he wasn’t
religious in Iraq and that he drank
alcohol then. He become very
religious when he was in an asylum
center in Germany for 2-3 years.
Several of Bujak’s former colleagues
say that he stopped work several
times a day to pray and that he took
over their offices to do so. One
colleague says that they discussed
politics during lunch, and that the
Iraqi had said he wanted to go to
paradise where the virgins were
waiting for him.
Bujak’s lawyer says that it’s not
uncommon for foreigners to smuggle
halal meat or falsify travel documents
and that it’s not connected to
terrorism.
Meanwhile, Bujak’s wife is afraid to
return to Norway. She says they
might become victims or racism and
that somebody might attack them.
She describes the family as moderate
Muslims.

The PST started following the
suspects after getting reports from the
British and American security
services that they suspect Davud of
having contacts with people linked to
terrorism. The PST is thinks that the
terrorist cell intended to attack
Chinese interests in Norway.
The PST found passport photos of
several men in Davud’s home, one of
which is a person identified as a
member of al-Qaeda.
VG Nett and Dagbladet report that
the PST and Jakobsen’s lawyer
confirm that Jakobsen was an
informant for the PST since 2009.
According to his lawyer, Jakobsen
approached the PST after his friend,
Davud, asked him to get a person into
Norway illegally. Jakobsen says that
at the time Davud showed him
several passport photos, and the PST
he now trying to link the request to
the photos they’ve seized.
Jakobsen had two contact people
with whom he met 3-4 times a month.
He didn’t report about the buying of
the chemicals, which he now regrets.

Davud met the Uzbek suspect in a
mosque in Sarpsborg. According to
imam Shaikhjami Abdulquddus the
two regularly visited the Muslim
Culture Center.
“Davud last visited three weeks ago.
Both appeared to me as honest, kind
people. Religious, but not
fundamentalist. I’ve very shocked
about the terrorism charges,” the
imam told Dagbladet.
For a while, all three suspects lived
in the same area. In a surprise move,
Davud moved to Sarpsborg in 2003.
Jakobsen lived in the nearby city of
Råde in 2004. The third suspect,
Shawan Sadek Saaed Bujak Bujak
(37) had an address in Sarpsborg
during that time.
Aftenposten reports that the
mosque’s board consists mainly of
Pakistanis, but it also attracts
Muslims of other nationalities.
It’s now described as a place for
radical Muslims. Klassekampen
reported in April 2009 that the
mosque’s imam previously defended
the death sentence against Muslims
who convert to Christianity.
Previously he also claimed that
“Islamic law is above Norwegian
law”.
Provorst Dag Mysen has been in
regular contact with the imam and
others from the mosque, and
describes the imam as welcoming and
pleasant, though firm in his attitudes.
“He insisted in talks with us priests
on the death sentence for converting
and that our culture is on a collision
course with Islam.”
Mysen stresses that there are many
intelligent Muslims in this mosque
who have other attitudes regarding
the major social issues and that the
imam’s view is not representative of
Muslims in Sarpsborg.
Aftenposten spoke with other
Muslim communities in Østfold who
disagree. In 2008 a group of Kurds
formed their own community in
Sarpsborg, following a conflict with
other mosque members, also on the
issue of supporting suicide bombers
in Northern Iraq.
A former member of the mosque
who wished to remain anonymous
says that the authorities should have
better control of then.
The Islamic Association in
Fredrikstad also distances itself from
the mosque in Sarpsborg.
“We are modern Muslims. We have
nothing to do with them,” says Haji
Asif Husain.
When Aftenposten visited the
mosque, the representatives of the
mosque did not want to be
photographed or to talk about their
relationship with Davud. But they
spoke out against terrorism and
stressed that supporters of al-Qaeda
were not welcome there. They also
expressed surprised that the man they
knew as ‘Rashidin’ is suspected of
planning terrorist acts.
The mosque is not part of the Islamic
Council of Norway, and in 2009 it’s
head Senaid Koblica told
Klassekampen they were not
optimistic about having better dialog
with the community.
Davud previously lived in Bergen.
Semet Abla, former leader of the
Uighur committee: “He was very
religious, and didn’t want to have
contact with the Uighur community
in Bergen. He preferred being with
the Somalis, Kurds, Arabs and Iraqis.
They were people who were very
religious. Most Uighurs are a little or
moderately religious. It seemed as if
he wasn’t interested in having contact
with such people.”

Force Israel’s hand on Palestinian home

Israel’s resumption of demolition in
East Jerusalem requires firm
intervention to prevent a total
breakdown in talks
In theory, a municipality
demolishing illegal structures on its
land should not raise any eyebrows.
In practice, however, such a measure
should be viewed in the context of the
wider politics of the locality – and
when it comes to the tinderbox of
Israeli-Palestinian affairs, the Israeli
authorities’ actions should be seen for
the provocative and spiteful
behaviour that they are.
Ending a nine-month freeze on
demolitions of Palestinian homes in
East Jerusalem, municipal workers
this week razed three houses in the
area, provoking a storm of
controversy both at home and abroad.
The freeze came about as a result of
diplomatic outrage last time Israel
carried out demolitions in East
Jerusalem during Hilary Clinton’s
visit to the region in March 2009 –
actions described by Clinton as
“unhelpful” and a violation of Israel’s
Road Map commitments.
Since then, Israel has continued to
flout agreements for a moratorium on
illegal construction in Israeli
settlements, while continuing to
pursue a hardline, heavy-handed
approach towards Palestinian
residents of East Jerusalem. Evictions
of Palestinian families to make way
for incoming settlers continue apace
in Sheikh Jarrah; in Silwan, 22 homes
are slated for demolition so that a
landscaped public garden can be
developed; and throughout the eastern
half of the city nonstop pressure is
applied as part of what activists term
the policy of “quiet transfer”.
According to Angela Godfrey-

wearing down of the Palestinians to
the point that they throw their hands
up in despair, quit the area and head
east. Housing permits are also part of
the quiet transfer, she says.
Much of East Jerusalem has been
declared an “open green zone”,
preventing houses being constructed,
which in turn leads to a severe
housing shortage in the region. Fewer
houses than people means that the
cost of property soars, pricing the
locals out of the market and forcing
them to seek cheaper accommodation
on the other side of the security wall.
Once they leave, they rescind their
rights to Jerusalem ID papers,
destroying any hopes of employment
in Israel proper – effectively keeping
them caged in the poverty of the West
Bank for ever.
Meanwhile, green lights are given to
settler construction left, right and
centre – a blatant case of double
standards, Godfrey-Goldstein points
out. In the rare event that Israeli
courts condemn settlement buildings
as illegal – such as Bet Yehonatan in
Silwan – eviction orders are ignored
by the settlers and unenforced by the
authorities, proving the duplicity of
the municipality when it comes to
building violations by those on either
side of the political divide.
On top of the awful implications for
the families made homeless by the
bulldozers this week, the demolitions
are another blow to Israeli-Palestinian
relations. The destruction of the
homes in Issawiya and Bet Hanina
are as clear a sign as any that Israeli
leaders care little for concessions and
compromise, preferring to make
quick political capital on the domestic
front by kowtowing to the ultra-
nationalists in their midst.
Israeli politicians have been treading
such a path for months, their resolve
strengthened by the toothless
international response to their
flouting of both international law and
basic moral codes.

demolitions last year as “air”,
summing up the sneering and self-
confident attitude of the majority of
those at the helm of Israeli politics.
Unfortunately, it is not hard to see
where their arrogance stems from: for
years, no American or European
leader has dared match their angry
words with concrete actions, such as
sanctions against Israel.
Despite all the hype surrounding
Barack Obama’s accession to the
throne of American politics, it is still
business as usual in the relationship
between the US and its client state in
the Middle East. Moves to deal
sensibly and seriously with the issue
of dividing Jerusalem have stalled in
line with every other major bone of
contention – such as the issues of
illegal settlements, water rights in the
West Bank and Palestinian refugees.
Against such a backdrop, Israel’s
resumption of demolition in East
Jerusalem can be seen for what it is: a
brash statement of intent on both the
micro and macro political levels.
“Judaising” East Jerusalem is a stated
policy of numerous settler groups and
their financial and political backers,
and every home demolition and
family eviction expedites the process
of ethnic cleansing already embarked
upon.
If nothing is done to stop the rot, the
inevitable outcome will be a total
breakdown in talks between the two
sides, likely sparking a wave of
violent clashes in its wake.
The only way to prevent such a
disastrous turn of events is for the
US, EU and others to force Israel’s
hand – for it is Israel who holds all
the cards when it comes to
negotiations. Anything less will not
do: time has all but run out to bring
the two sides to the table, and the
only winners from the current status
quo are the extremists. Israelis and
Palestinians alike don’t deserve, nor
can they afford, the consequences of
another intifada, hence firm
intervention is a necessity.

Ghaddafi has his own flamboyant
and attention-seeking stance on the
Israel-Palestinian conflict. He is a one
-stater who, having been badly
burned in the past, appears to want to
be seen as pragmatic and peaceful in

the western press. Never mind that
his proposals are demented and
would result in mass death,
destruction and chaos in Israel and
the region if anyone were mad
enough to implement them… . Of
course, despite wanting to appear to
be pragmatic, Ghaddafi and his
regime are staunch enemies of Israel.
In recent years, Ghaddafi’s regime
has made efforts to paint his son, Saif
al-Islam, as a moderate pragmatist
who should be welcomed as a voice
of wisdom and common sense (never
mind that the Libyan state is among
the world’s most repressive
dictatorships, and that Saif al-Islam
sits at the center of this dictatorship).
Saif al-Islam’s press statements in the
wake of the ship drama project a
sane, pragmatic image, to an extent
that actually surprised me.
‘Do you want the grapes or to kill the
vineyard’s guard?’ To tell you the
truth, we want the grapes and we got
them – so there’s no reason to cause
any problems.
The problem was not a naval conflict
with Israel, but rebuilding Gaza and
helping our Palestinians brothers.
Of course, the man also spreads
nonsense about Gazan conditions and
about Israel. We’re not talking about
a man who really cares very much
about the truth. But I’m slightly
impressed that he’s willing to dismiss
the idea of mindlessly attacking Israel
for its own sake. In a region where
ludicrous flights of romanticized
genocidal fantasy are the norm, this is
an unusually rational stance.
Unexpected Wins
The Ghaddafi regime has won a huge
tactical PR victory – a much bigger
win than I expected them to secure,
and clearly much bigger than
Ghaddafi ever hoped to secure. At the

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, chairman of
the Gaddafi International Charity and
Development Foundation which tried
to send an aid vessel to Gaza, says he
reached an Egyptian-mediated
agreement with Israel on Wednesday,
allowing him to infuse $50 million
for the restoration of the Strip and
transfer construction materials to
Gaza.
“We will soon start funneling $50
million in coordination with UNRWA
(the United Nations Relief and Works
Agency for Palestine Refugees) to
begin rebuilding Gaza and transfer
humanitarian aid and construction
materials, without any objection on
the part of the Israeli government.”
According to Gaddafi Jr., “This is an
agreement we never expected or
significantly ahead and Israel
achieved its objective. The UNRWA
received a windfall. Hamas, which
has been demanding that the Libyan
ship dock in Gaza, looks mildly
stupid.
What Libya Won
* The Libyan regime received a lot of
press attention (especially for the
Heir Apparent).
* It spun itself as being more
moderate and stable than Turkey.
Under normal circumstances, this
would have been a very difficult feat,
but Erdogan has watered down
Turkey’s reputation significantly, and
Libya was very quick to take
advantage.
* It showed itself to be more effectual
than Iran, Hezbollah and its fellow
Arab states, who for all their talk,
have not yet launched any ships.
* It gets to play the hero in Gaza, and
should therefore look good in the
Arab media and certainly in the west.
* It looks good at the UN, because
it’s funding Gaza repairs via the
UNRWA.
* It allowed Egypt to act as
intermediary between Israel and
Libya (I’ll come to this in a minute).
* It made Israel look aggressive,
particularly while the navy was
shadowing the ship and nobody knew
what would happen, without looking
aggressive itself.
* It got Israel to sign off on a Libyan
initiative in Gaza.
Ghaddafi accomplished all of this at
the low price of a ship, a bit of cargo
and the promise of about $50M to the
UNRWA (assuming that the money
actually flows, and assuming that this
is not money that Libya had already
promised in the past but witheld). I’m
sure that Ghaddafi’s staff are
celebrating.

that it has failed to receive one dollar
for the restoration of Gaza so far, and
was therefore unsuccessful in
bringing in even one iron skewer or

UNRWA’s 2009 budget shows that it
did not receive a single cent from
Libya. Apparently, Libya never gave
any money to UNRWA over the sixty
years it has existed.
All of a sudden, Libya became aware
of UNRWA’s existence – and is
happy to funnel money there?
Arab nations are fairly consistent in
spurning UNRWA. Their (public)
attitude has always been that the West
is responsible for the existence of
Palestinian Arab refugees by allowing
Israel to be created, so therefore the
West should pay for their basic needs
forever – even as they are hosted in
Arab countries who have adamantly
refused to give them equal rights.
Only last year, when UNRWA asked
for emergency funds to help Gaza,
between Arabs and Israelis, a
mediator that is essential to the peace
process. This repuation has taken
some blows in recent years. Iran and
Hamas have consciously taken aim at
Egyptian diplomatic prestige and at
Egyptian influence over Gaza, and
Egyptian influence and prestige have
been battered by the obstructionism
and hostility of an obnoxious little
statelet (Gaza).
The Libya-Egypt/Egypt-Israel
agreement allowed the Egyptian
government to demonstrate both its
skill as a mediator and its ability to
bring Israel to the table. Egypt can
claim an unexpected diplomatic win,
one that has no downside for the
Arabs. Furthermore, in doing the two-
part Gaza deal with Egypt, Libya
tacitly acknowledged that Gaza lies
within Egypt’s sphere of influence.
The fact that the flow of aid is going
to filter through UNRWA instead of
being handed directly and openly to
Hamas embarasses Hamas somewhat,
and Cairo must be smiling about that;
Hamas has been sticking its finger in
Mubarak’s eye, and there is no love
lost between the Egyptians and
Hamas.
So this looks like a huge win for
Egypt. In only a few days, Egypt
settled a crisis, negotiated an
agreement between two states that
don’t talk to each other, beefed up its
diplomaic resume, received
acknowledgement of its influence
over Gaza and embarassed Hamas.
Mubarak and Suleiman have every
reason to be happy with this outcome.
Egypt evidently had mediation
assistance from Austrian businessman
Martin Schlaff, but Ghaddafi Jr. only
mentions the Egyptians.
What Israel Won
Israel’s interest was always to keep
the ship from running the blockade.
did a couple of oil-rich Arab
countries pledge one-time
contributions – $25M from Saudi
Arabia and $35M from Kuwait. Arab
governments’ annual cash
contributions to UNRWA are pitiably
small, about $7M out of the $470M
total last year. Arab nations have
consistently spurned UNRWA
appeals for cash and have equally
consistently failed to pay on their
pledges to UNRWA.
In fact, Luxembourg has given more
cash to UNRWA’s annual budget
than any Arab country.
If Libya decides to give $50 million
to UNRWA, it will suddenly become
UNRWA’s biggest Arab supporter,
and it might be the biggest single
contribution ever from an Arab
country in UNRWA’s history.
Compare that to the $267M the US
gave in 2009, or the $48M that was
given to UNRWA by – Sweden.
It seems a bit cynical for Libya to
crow over how it will now give all

Israel wanted to set a precedent,
according to which any real aid
vessels will unload at Ashdod or,
failing that, somewhere else, and the
aid must flow into Gaza via
controlled channels rather than
confronting the Israeli navy.
Israel certainly isn’t worried about a
$50M influx of aid via the UNRWA.
The amount of money sloshing
around in Gaza already dwarfs $50M.
Conclusion
Ghaddafi is a murderous tyrant and a
very strange man. His regime is one
of the worst in the world. But I’ll tip
my hat, this once, to whomever
handled this situation on their side; I
can appreciate Olympic-caliber
gymnastics.

Goldstone II The UN ‘Human Rights
Council’ has appointed a second
commission whose job is to look into
the implementation of the Goldstone
Report from last fall. I guess you will
all be shocked to hear that the
outcome of this commission’s report
has been predetermined just like the
original Goldstone Commission was.
This second rendition of Goldstone
was crafted by a March 2010
resolution of the Human Rights
Council. That resolution first declares
that Israel – and only Israel –
committed “unlawful acts” in the
Gaza war. And then it establishes a
committee of experts to monitor and
assess all judicial and other
proceedings taken by Israel to
respond to the General Assembly’s
endorsement of the Goldstone report
and its long list of supposed Israeli
crimes.
The mandate also asks the new
committee to assess the proceedings
of the enigmatic “Palestinian side.” In
the many resolutions on the Gaza war
from the General Assembly and the
Human Rights Council no mention is
ever made of “Hamas,” which keeps
with the UN fiction that the war
entailed wanton Israeli aggression in
a vacuum. Instead of eight years of
rocket attacks on Israel’s civilian
population and an elected government
that openly advocates genocide, the
resolution creating the Goldstone
inquiry describes the problem with
the Palestinian side as “crude

US networks reject Ground Zero
mosque ad Many of my non-US
readers may not even be aware that
an effort is afoot to build a 13-story
mosque on ‘Ground Zero,’ the site of
the former World Trade Center.
Here’s a television ad in opposition
to the mosque. Let’s go to the
videotape and then I’ll have more.
Two of the major US television
networks – NBC and CBS – are
refusing to run the ad.
In her letter rejecting the spot, NBC
Universal advertising standards
manager Jennifer Riley wrote:
“An ad questioning the wisdom of
building a mosque at ground zero
would meet our issues of public
controversy advertising criteria.
However, this ad which ambiguously
defines ‘they’ as referenced in the
spot makes it unclear as to whether
the reference is to terrorists or to the
Islamic religious organization that is
rockets…result[ing] in the loss of
four civilian lives and some injuries.”
The fact that the mandate of the
Goldstone inquiry was tainted from
the outset, and that its successor is cut
from the same cloth, did not deter
three more lawyers from taking this
latest UN job. They are German
Christian Tomuschat (chair),
Malaysian Param Cumaraswamy, and
American Mary Davis. As it turns
out, the takers and their UN
associates have more in common than
first meets the eye.
The members of the new committee
were appointed on June 14 by the UN
high commissioner for human rights,
South African Navi Pillay. One of
Pillay’s two legal advisers, and chief
of her office’s “rule of law” branch, is
Palestinian Mona Rishmawi, former
executive director of the Palestinian
NGO al-Haq and until 2000 a
prominent director of a unit of the
International Commission of Jurists
sponsoring the building of the
mosque. Consequently, the ad is not
acceptable under our guidelines for
broadcast.”
A CBS official, Marty Daly, also
rejected the ad, according to e-mails
shared by NRT PAC executive
director Scott Wheeler.
“They have very selective standards
— they’ll run anything MoveOn.org
throws out there,” said Wheeler, also
citing a controversial 2004 NAACP
ad invoking the slain James Byrd.
The word “they,” he said, “is a
reference to the people who are
putting up the money with the intent
of provoking us.”
Sorry, but that’s ridiculous. Unless
there’s actionable libel involved
(which this wasn’t) or incitement to
criminal activity (none of that either)
there is no reason for a major network
to refuse a political ad. This strikes
me as yet another instance of pre-
emptive political correctness.
On Wednesday, Pam Geller of Atlas
Shrugs appeared on CNN to debate
the mosque with Ibrahim Ramey of
the Muslim Society of America.
(ICJ).
All three of the new committee
members are affiliated with the ICJ.
Committee members Christian
Tomuschat and Param Cumaraswamy
were members of the ICJ’s executive
committee during Rishmawi’s term at
the ICJ. Cumaraswamy was ICJ’s
vice president until 2006. Currently
both are honorary members. Mary
Davis is currently on the board of the
American Association for the ICJ.
The ICJ has been closely connected
with the Human Rights Council’s
campaign to vilify Israel over the
Gaza war, and in particular, the
Goldstone report and its follow-up.
In January 2009 the Council held a
special session to denounce Israeli
actions and adopt the resolution that
gave rise to the Goldstone inquiry.
Of the thousands of UN-accredited
NGOs, the ICJ was one of two-dozen
that spoke. It claimed Israel had
violated international law during the

There is no way that a mosque
belongs at Ground Zero. Why should
Ground Zero be turned into an
Islamic Holy Site as happened in
Nazareth and as nearly happened in
Bethlehem’s Church of the Nativity?
The amount of political correctness
in America today is appalling. I read
Pam’s blog fairly regularly and I am
amazed at how difficult she’s finding
it to get the message out regarding
militant Islam. I’m not suggesting
that people don’t have a right to
disagree with her – I’m suggesting
that it’s amazing how many entities
are not willing to run her ads.
Wake up America, before it’s too
late. Your mainstream media is
clearly on the wrong side. I don’t care
how ‘divisive’ the fight is – if
militant Islam is not fought, you will
end up like Europe.
P.S. Extreme Leftist Eric Bohlert’s
Media Matters site used the occasion
to argue against allowing Pam to
conflict and called for the inquiry’s
creation. Then, on October 16, 2009,
when the Council held a special
session to endorse the Goldstone
report, the ICJ was again one of the
few NGO speakers. This time it
specifically called the Israeli
investigations into the Gaza conflict
“ineffective as they lack safeguards
of independence and impartiality…”
On June 24, 2010, soon after the
appointment of the three senior ICJ
members to the Goldstone follow-up
committee, the ICJ issued a public
statement coming to the defense of
Goldstone, his apartheid-era past, and
his report.
Read the whole thing.
What could go wrong? I suppose if
the ICJ weren’t doing it, Human
Rights Watch, Amnesty and the New
Israel Fund would do it anyway.

true tragedy of the ‘Palestinians.’
Most of these people would be happy
for the opportunity to own home and
have a job that provides a normal
living, whether where they are
currently living or in other countries.
Most ‘Palestinian refugees’ in the
Arab world do not have the financial
wherewithal to pick up and move. So
they remain in captivity in their Arab
host countries, living the false dream
that the keys that they hold will open
to President Abbas in a frank
exchange that it was very important
to continue to make progress in
reducing the incitement and anti-
Israel sentiments that are sometimes
expressed in schools and mosques
and in the public square, because all
those things are impediments to
peace.”
At a dinner for Abbas during his
Washington visit, I confronted him
with several recent examples of
incitement, as well as the denial that
he made to the President. His reply
was that of a bureaucrat, not a
peacemaker: He did not deny the
allegations, but said that if true they
should be raised at a tripartite
committee (the United States, the
Palestinian Authority and Israel) that
had been established by the Oslo
Accords.
If peace is our goal, such a response
is deeply inadequate. Abbas should
handle incitement by stopping it, not
seeking committee meetings – and
especially not by denying that
incitement occurs in the first place.
Of course, it’s easy to see why,
politically, Abbas and others in the
PLO and Fatah leadership avoid
confronting these organizations’ long
involvement in terrorism, but if they
cannot do so, the chances for real
peace are slim. A leadership whose
maps do not even show an entity
up their great grandparents’ non-
existent homes.
In Lebanon, Druze leader Walid
Jumblatt has introduced legislation to
grant the ‘Palestinians’ some limited
form of civil rights – after 62 years.
It’s not clear to me what motivates
Jumblatt – I don’t read enough
Lebanese blogs and media to be sure.
But what is clear – and stunning –
from this ‘Palestinian’ blog is the
extent to which the feeling that ‘it’s
not time yet’ to give the ‘Palestinians’
rights is across the board, and how
the great motivating fear is to make
sure that the hundreds of thousands of
‘Palestinians’ who live in Lebanon
are never naturalized there. As you
read this, please keep in mind that for
the last 62 years, the ‘Palestinians’
have had no right to own land in
Lebanon or work in most professions.
As a result, many of them are dirt
poor and trapped in a situation from
which they cannot escape.
The bill was presented by
progressive MP Walid Jumblatt, the
Druze leader of the Democratic
Gathering bloc.
An-Nahar reported Jumblatt is aware
of the possibility of postponing
debate on the proposals, and he ‘does
not mind’,” Ma’an said.
According to the report, Hariri would
called Israel is unlikely to tell
Palestinian refugees that it has given
up their “right of return” or that their
long-hoped-for Palestinian state
within the 1967 borders will not
include control of the Temple Mount
in Jerusalem.

Obama is right to keep raising this
subject with Abbas, but Presidents
have been raising it for years. As the
Palestinian leadership never seems to
pay any penalty for its words,
America’s seriousness about the
peace process is in doubt.
If the Obama administration is
dedicated to a major peace effort in
the coming year, the incitement issue
make the request of Berri so the
proposal can be further discussed
among the various blocs.
MPs from the March 14 bloc,
spearheaded by the Christian
Phalangist and Maronite parties, have
introduced their own, weaker refugee
rights bill. This bill grants refugees
humanitarian and social rights but not
civil rights.
Lebanon’s the Daily Star reported
Tuesday that their law would
“provide refugees with a work and
residency permit exempted from fees
allowing refugees the right to
employment as well as the right to a
passport in line with Lebanese laws,”
though many professions would
remain off limits to Palestinians. The
Star further said parties are closer to
reaching a consensus on the March 14
bill.
Jumblatt said Wednesday that he
would withdraw his bill if a separate

should be at the top of its agenda.
Because when direct negotiations do
finally begin, the key test of
Palestinian commitment to peace will
not be what Abbas and his colleagues
say to Americans in English, but what
they say in Arabic to Palestinians –
about Israel, about terrorism and
about real peace.

The 70-year-old German is part of a
group which keeps tabs on mosques
across Germany, monitoring them for
what he calls an “intolerant Islam of
terror.” Over the years, he has gained
a certain amount of notoriety.

Reinhard Werner is a few minutes
early, but because he doesn’t want to
be noticed, he stands outside on the
sidewalk in front of the mosque,
trying to look as inconspicuous as

It’s Friday afternoon in Munich’s
Pasing neighborhood and men are
scurrying past Werner on their way to
Friday prayers. All of them, in
Werner’s eyes, are enemies. He
claims that the mosque is spreading
what he calls an “intolerant Islam of
terror.”
“Do you see the sign over the
entrance?” he says.
The letters “DITIB” are printed on
the sign. DITIB, an acronym for the
Turkish-Islamic Union for Religious

Survey finds UK’s Jewish
community supports Israel’s right to
defend itself but should now help
create Palestinian state
The majority of British Jews think
Israel should give up some of its land
in return for peace and more than half
would support negotiations with
Hamas, according to research
published today.
The study carried out by the Institute
for Jewish Policy Research (JPR)
found Jews in Britain strongly
identify with and support Israel, with
nine out of 10 having visited the
country.
Nearly three quarters (72%) agreed
Israel’s action in Gaza in 2008 and
2009 was “a legitimate act of self-
defence”.
But more than three-quarters (77%)
favour a “two state solution”, which
would see the creation of a
Palestinian state, as the “only way” to
for roughly 900 mosque
congregations in Germany. It is
controlled by a Turkish government
organization based in Ankara, the
Office for Religious Affairs, making
it indirectly answerable to the Turkish
prime minister. “A military mosque,”
says Werner.
“Do you see that the letter ‘I’ in
DITIB resembles a minaret? And that
the minarets look like missiles?” he
asks, beseechingly. It isn’t always
easy for Werner to make himself
understood.
Werner is a member of the
“Anonymous Mosque Observers,” a
group of Muslims who fled to
Germany from Muslim countries
because they came into conflict with
religious rules.
Although Werner is not a Muslim
himself, nor is he fleeing anything, he
feels a kinship with Muslims who
have fled their native countries. These
Muslims trust their more settled
Muslim counterparts about as much
as former US President George W.
Bush trusted terrorist leader Osama
bin Laden. They keep tabs on what
goes on in mosques because they
want to be sure that they are still safe
in Germany.

He reports everything he sees and
hears to the Federal Office for the
Protection of the Constitution (BfV),

Boyd, said: “Fundamentally, we
found that most Jews feel a strong
sense of connection to Israel, and for
many it forms an important, and even

“Jews in Britain are pro-Israel and
pro-peace. Their hawkishness on
some issues is typically motivated by
a clear concern for Israel’s security,
while their dovishness on others
reflects a deep-set desire to see the
country at peace, both with itself and
with its neighbours.”

But a few weeks ago, something
dreadful happened: a French
contingent of UNIFIL actually tried
to carry out this mission. It began
using sniffer dogs to detect illegal
weapons and explosives and insisted
on searching homes and yards where
it had reason to believe Hezbollah
was stockpiling such arms. The
immediate result was a series of
clashes apparently either staged or
encouraged by Hezbollah between
Lebanese villagers and UNIFIL
troops. In the most serious incident,
villagers hurled stones at the
peacekeepers, seized their weapons,
and vandalized their vehicle. The
second result was that, at the end of
last week, UNIFIL agreed to stop
using sniffer dogs and refrain from
entering homes and yards – or, in
other words, to stop carrying out its
mission of detecting illegal Hezbollah

Lebanese press as an open letter to
the Lebanese people. In fairness, you
can’t really blame UNIFIL. Soldiers
are expected to risk their lives to
defend their own countries and their
own people, but it’s quite
understandable that they are less
enthusiastic about risking their lives
to defend someone else’s country and
someone else’s people unless their
own country sees a vital national
interest in so doing (as the U.S. does
in Afghanistan). And the risks are
real: in 2007, for instance, six
Spanish UNIFIL members whom
Israel considered particularly
effective were killed by a roadside
bomb in what appeared to be a clear
message from Hezbollah.
Indeed. And the fact that we are still
depending on UNIFIL for security
along our Lebanese border is a severe
and immediate problem.
