Title of Lesson: Unit 6: Graphing Systems Grade: 8th

Core Components
Subject, Content Area, or Topic
Algebra 1, Unit 6: solving systems of equations and inequalities by graphing
Virginia Essential Knowledge and Skills (SOL)
A.4 The student will solve multistep linear and quadratic equations in two variables,
e) solving systems of two linear equations in two variables algebraically and graphically;
f) solving real-world problems involving equations and systems of equations. Graphing calculators
will be used both as a primary tool in solving problems and to verify algebraic solutions.
A.5 The student will solve multistep linear inequalities in two variables, including
d) solving systems of inequalities.
Lesson objectives
The student will solve systems of equations and inequalities by graphing by hand and using
the calculator.

*Anticipatory Set
< 2 mins Ask: Predict: What are systems of equations?
What happens if you are asked to solve for x and y?

*State the Objectives (grade-level terms). The student should be able to say:
Learning I can solve systems of equations and inequalities by graphing by hand and using the
Target calculator as evident by an 80% or better on the concept check.

*Instructional Input or Procedure /*Modeling

~ 5 mins TTW will go through Unit 6 starter pack to point out key features: What will be covered,
important dates, performance task, track your grade, video help, etc.

What are systems of equations? Start with equations:

Notes: How do you solve for x and y? This happens when two conditions must be met at the
30 mins same time. For example, have you heard the one about the two trains leaving the
station? When do they pass each other?

If the first trains speed is represented as y= 2x+1 and the second train travels at y = 2/3
Ask: x -2, at what time will they pass each other and at what mile marker?

How would you try to solve it?
Ask:
Our favorite thing to do is graph equations, lets try this one. On your graph paper:
What do these two lines do? Intersect!

At this point on the graph what is try about the coordinate point? Both lines pass
through it. Both lines have this coordinate point in their table. This coordinate point is
part of the solution to both equations.

Before we get into word problems, lets start with a few equations of a line:
Ask: TTW do one by hand and one on the calculator.

What types of solutions can an equation have? (Hint: There are three)

Do the special cases: One solution, Infinite solution, no solution

What about inequalities? We graph those. For example, the recycle question from the
test. What if you also had to take into account garbage? There are two inequalities there
too.

Ask: TTW do one by hand and one on the calculator.

How is this different than equations? What is our solution for inequalities? What does
that tell you about the solution to a system of inequalities?

*Check for Understanding

TTW periodically ask for thumbs up/sideways/down for understanding.
*Guided Practice
20 mins Students will pick groups of three to complete either a system of equations or
+ inequalities on paper (must show graph). Students will then post answer on large paper
20 mins to present. Students will also answer each of the following questions:
1. Describe your solution.
2. Check your work in your calculator.
*Independent Practice
Homework: Graphing Systems (Pick 2 equations and 2 inequalities and answer
questions on back)
Assessment (formal or informal)
15 mins Concept check (only one inequalities) (Justification: if the students can understand how
to graph systems of inequalities, systems of equations are a little simpler. The major
different in the type of solution.)
*Closure
Ask: 1. What are the differences between solving one equation and solving a system of
< 2 mins equations?
2. How do we interpret the solutions to systems of equations? What about the system of
inequalities?

Differentiation Strategies (enrichment, accommodations, remediation, or by learning style).

Lesson Critique. To be completed following the lesson. Did your students meet the objective(s)? What part
of the lesson would you change? Why?

*Denotes Madeline Hunter lesson plan elements.
