Algebra 1, Unit 6: solving systems of equations and inequalities by graphing
Virginia Essential Knowledge and Skills (SOL)
A.4 The student will solve multistep linear and quadratic equations in two variables,
e) solving systems of two linear equations in two variables algebraically and graphically;
f) solving real-world problems involving equations and systems of equations. Graphing calculators
will be used both as a primary tool in solving problems and to verify algebraic solutions.
A.5 The student will solve multistep linear inequalities in two variables, including
d) solving systems of inequalities.
Lesson objectives
The student will solve systems of equations and inequalities by graphing by hand and using
the calculator.

*Anticipatory Set
< 2 mins Ask: Predict: What are systems of equations?
What happens if you are asked to solve for x and y?
*State the Objectives (grade-level terms). The student should be able to say:
Learning I can solve systems of equations and inequalities by graphing by hand and using the
Target calculator as evident by an 80% or better on the concept check.
If the first trains speed is represented as y= 2x+1 and the second train travels at y = 2/3
Ask: x -2, at what time will they pass each other and at what mile marker?

How would you try to solve it?
Ask:
Our favorite thing to do is graph equations, lets try this one. On your graph paper:
What do these two lines do? Intersect!
At this point on the graph what is try about the coordinate point? Both lines pass
through it. Both lines have this coordinate point in their table. This coordinate point is
part of the solution to both equations.
Before we get into word problems, lets start with a few equations of a line:
Ask: TTW do one by hand and one on the calculator.
What types of solutions can an equation have? (Hint: There are three)
What about inequalities? We graph those. For example, the recycle question from the
test. What if you also had to take into account garbage? There are two inequalities there
too.
How is this different than equations? What is our solution for inequalities? What does
that tell you about the solution to a system of inequalities?
Lesson Critique. To be completed following the lesson. Did your students meet the objective(s)? What part
of the lesson would you change? Why?
