Dear Ninth Grade MLC Families,

This semester, your child will be involved in a program called Reducing the Risk: Building Skills to
Prevent Pregnancy, STD and HIV. The lessons teach ways to prevent HIV, other sexually
transmitted diseases (STDs) and pregnancy. Students will learn how HIV and other STDs are
transmitted and how teens can best protect themselves. Abstinence choosing not to have sex
will be given as the best choice for students, but accurate information about other protection
methods will also be provided. Reducing the Risk is an evidence-based program that meets the
Connecticut State guidelines for health education.

Included in the Reducing the Risk program are important lessons on communication, decision
making and refusal skills. The program also includes a homework activity for parents and teens
to continue the discussion about HIV, other STDs and pregnancy at home. We hope you will do
this assignment with your child and share your knowledge and values. This homework
assignment is voluntary and students will not share parent responses in class.

You are welcome to preview the Reducing the Risk program materials at any time. Please contact
your childs health teacher, Stacey Rowe or School Nurse, Dawn Carter at the MLC and we will
arrange a preview time and answer any questions you may have about the program.

If you DO NOT want your child to participate in the Reducing the Risk program, you must
complete the permission slip on the reverse side of this letter and return it to school by April 17th
so that we can arrange a different learning activity for your child, If we do not hear from you, we
will assume you allow your child to participate in the Reducing the Risk program.
