Functional areas are teams of employees who have similar skills and expertise. For example,
a company's sales department is a common functional area, and the staff in this area would all

Companies organize by functional areas for many reasons. First, it's more efficient to have
staff with similar skills grouped together. They can easily team up on projects requiring their
expertise and will have backup expertise if one staffer is unable to complete their work. For
example, a company is going to set up a new server in their data center and they'll likely need

6. FINANCE FUCTION

Meaning of Finance
The part of the organization that manage its money. The business functions of a finance
department typically in planning organizing, auditing accounting for and controlling its
companys finance department also usually produces the companys financial statement.
Concept of Finance
Finance plays a major role in a firm some of them are given below.
Maximizing shareholders value can be done over long-term, so the job of the finance
department is to determine how best to do both. Sometimes the goals may appear to
contradict each other.
The finance department is devoted to the task of the figuring out how to allocate asset for
the overarching goal of maximizing shareholders value they must ensure that the right
asset are in right place at the right.
The finance department must also manage the companys liabilities so that all projects
are financed in an optimal way without taking on too much risk.
Meaning of Accounting
A department in a company which deals with money paid, received, borrowed, or owed.

6.1 OPERATING CYCLE

[FIGURE-13 Operating Cycle]

The operating cycle is the average period of time required for a business to make an initial
outlay of cash to produce goods, sell the goods, and receive cash from customers in exchange
for the goods.

6.2 SOURCES OF FUNDS

Tax Increment Financing: TIF subsidies are geared toward real estate development in
targeted areas. Depending on the state, the subsidies can be as large as 20% to 30%
of the cost of the project. Better yet, you may even be able to borrow against this
subsidized value. If your own community does not offer a TIF program, look at
communities that do. You may end up a little farther from your home or office, but it
could be worth your while.

Internal Revenue Service: No, the IRS does not lend money. But it does allow you to
deduct expenses. If you are paying a heap in taxes, evaluate whether you can use
your profits to expand your businessand reduce your tax bill.

Vendors: Dick Schulze built Best Buy with financing from large consumer
electronics firmsin other words, his suppliers. This way, your financiers do not
control your growth; you do. Just be sure not to enslave yourself to a handful of
powerful suppliers in the process.
Smart leases: Leasing fixed assets conserves cash for working capital (to cover
inventory), hitch is generally tougher to finance, especially for an unproven business.
Warning: Dont put so much money down that you end up spending the same amount
of cash as you would have had you bought the asset with a down payment. The cost
of a lease may be slightly higher than bank financing (see source No. 10), but the
cost of the down payment you did not have to make is likely to be less painful than
the dilution you suffer from giving away equity.

Bank loans: Banks are like the supermarket of debt financing. They provide short-,
mid- or long-term financing, and they finance all asset needs, including working
capital, equipment and real estate. This assumes, of course, that you can generate
enough cash flow to cover the interest payments (which are tax deductible) and
return the principal.

Banks want assurance of repayment by requiring personal guarantees and even a

secured interest (such as a mortgage) on personal assets. Unlike other financing
relationships, banks offer some flexibility: You can pay off your loan early and
terminate the agreement. VCs and other institutional investors may not be so
amenable.

6.3 SOURCES OF WORKING CAPITAL

Short Term Sources of Working Capital

Bank Overdraft

A bank overdraft is when someone is able to spend more than what is actually in
their bank account. The overdraft will be limited. A bank overdraft is also a type of
loan as the money is technically borrowed.

Commercial Papers

A commercial paper is an unsecured promissory note. Commercial paper is a

money-market security issued by large corporations to get money to meet short term
debt obligations e.g. payroll, and is only backed by an issuing bank or corporations
promise to pay the face amount on the maturity date specified on the note. Since it is
not backed by collateral, only firms with excellent credit ratings will be able to sell
their commercial paper at a reasonable price.

Trade finance

An exporter requires an importer to prepay for goods shipped. The importer

naturally wants to reduce risk by asking the exporter to document that the goods
have been shipped. The importers bank assists by providing a letter of credit to the
exporter (or the exporters bank) providing for payment upon presentation of certain
documents, such as a bill of lading. The exporters bank may make a loan to the
exporter on the basis of the export contract.

6.4 LONG TERM SOURCES OF WORKING CAPITAL

Equity Capital

Equity capital refers to the portion of a companys equity that has been obtained (or
will be obtained) by trading stock to a shareholder for cash or an equivalent item of
capital value. Equity comprises the nominal values of all equity issued (that is, the
sum of their par values). Share capital can simply be defined as the sum of capital
(cash or other assets) the company has received from investors for its shares.
Loans

A loan is a type of debt which it entails the redistribution of financial assets over time,
between the lender and the borrower. In a loan, the borrower initially receives or
borrows an amount of money from the lender, and is obligated to pay back or repay an
equal amount of money to the lender at a later time. Typically, the money is paid back
in regular installments, or partial repayments; in an annuity, each installment is the
same amount. Acting as a provider of loans is one of the principal tasks for financial
institutions like banks. A secured loan is a loan in which the borrower pledges some
asset (e.g. a car or property) as collateral. Unsecured loans are monetary loans that are
not secured against the borrowers assets.

dissatisfaction or conflict with another party.

7.1 MANAGEMENT ISSUES INVOLVED IN THE EXPORT DECISION

Management Objectives-
What are the company's reasons for pursuing export markets? Are they solid
objectives (e.g., increasing sales volume or developing a broader, more stable
customer base) or are they frivolous
What are management's expectations for the export effort? How quickly does
management expect export operations to become self-sustaining? What level of
return on investment is expected from the export program?

Production Capacity-
How is the present capacity being used? Will filling export orders hurt domestic
sales?
What will be the cost of additional production?
Are there fluctuations in the annual workload? When? Why?
What minimum order quantity is required to make a shipment worthwhile?

What would be required to design and package products specifically for export?
