PlantWeb Using FOUNDATION fieldbus
PlantWeb is a process automation system that uses
the power of field intelligence to improve plant
performance.
y PlantWeb supports discrete and analog
inputs and outputs as well as HART, Serial,
FOUNDATION fieldbus, Profibus DP,
DeviceNet and AS-i communications
y PlantWeb supports Control Anywhere

Definitions & Key Points
Profibus DP is
y An all digital, serial, two-way communication system that interconnects
measurement and control devices
y Essentially a communications protocol that provides an interface between
discrete/analog devices and automation systems
y Profibus technology is developed and administrated by the Profibus User
Organization
Profibus uses Device Data Base Files (GSD/GSE files) which provides the
characteristics of a device type.

Profibus DP
Profibus DP is one of a family of protocols which was Rev 2ly a German national
standard (DIN 19245) developed principally by Siemens and 20 other companies and
universities and later made part of an European Fieldbus specification (EN 50 170). The
technology is controlled by the Profibus User Organization, an organization consisting of
approximately 1,000 member companies in 23 regional Profibus User Organizations
united under the umbrella organization Profibus International.
Beginnings
y Established November 1989
y Approximately 1,000 member companies
y The objective was the realization and popularization of the usage of a bit-serial
Fieldbus

PlantWeb Architecture Model
y Field Devices I/O Modules , measuring transducer, drive unit, valves
y Scalable platforms The DeltaV host has been designed to manage large
amounts of data. It is equally well suited for small and large applications. The
hardware is easily expanded by adding additional controllers and additional I/O
capacity.
y Integrated, modular software (AMS Inside) A package that allows users to
commission, configure, calibrate, and troubleshoot devices from a Windows
Explorer type screen.
y Management execution With OLE and OPC, data from the DeltaV system can
be communicated via the existing business LAN to other compliant Windows
applications such as Excel and Access.

Communication Technology
The communication technology that is used in Profibus is based on a standard (OSI)
model, but does not include layers that are not pertinent to ciritical process control data.
The Profibus model consists of three major layers:
Physical Layer
The physical layer defines the physical transmission characteristics - Standard
RS-485 Transmission
Communication Stack
The comm stack consists of one layer [2] of communication which defines the Bus
Access Protocol.
User Layer
The Profibus User Organization has defined a standard User Layer that is based on DP
Basic Functions, DP Extentions and DP Profiles.

Device Database Files (GSD)
Profibus devices have different performanse characteristics. These characteristics are
specified in an electronic data sheet sometimes called a device database file or GSD file.

Device Database Files (GSD files)

13-14
Device Database Files (GSD)
GSD files are prepared individually by the vendor for each type of device and made
available to the user in the form of a device database sheet and a device data base file.
The device data base file is divided into three parts:
y General specifications contains vendor and device names, hardware and
software release states, baudrates supported etc.
y DP master-related specifications not used for slave devices.
y DP slave-related specifications the number and type of I/O channels,
specification of diagnostic tests.

Profibus DP Network
Profibus DP permits Mono-master and Multi-master systems.
The DeltaV Profibus card supports up to 64 slave devices on a Profibus network which
must be a Mono-master network for the first release (5.0).
Each Profibus DP system can contain three different types of devices:
y DP Master Class 1 (DPM1) [address 1] DeltaV Profibus card
y DP Master Class 2 (DPM2) Not used
y DP Slave [address 2-125] A Profibus slave can support both process input
and output data. The Slaves can be either compact or modular (I/O added on to
device). Addresses are assigned by user and has to match hardware addresses.

DeltaV-supported Profibus Devices
Interoperability
Any device from any manufacturer that conforms to the Profibus User Organization
standards will work well with other certified devices.
Note: Devices tested with and supported by DeltaV will have GSD files in the library.
