1. A triangle has angles x, 2x and 84 as shown.
Find the value of x. (Please note, the diagram is not drawn to scale)
3. (a) During the sales a shopkeeper sells 60% of his garden lamps.
40% of lamps = 50
Therefore 10% of lamps = 12.5
Therefore 100% of lamps = 125
Answer: 125 garden lamps (3)
(b) The shopkeeper bought the garden lamps from a wholesaler for 2.55 per lamp.
He sells the lamps for 5 during the sale.
If the shopkeeper does not sell the remaining 50 garden lamps, how much profit
has the shopkeeper made?
A stall has a card game where a goldfish can be won if anyone can turn over a face
card (i.e. Jack, Queen or King) from a pack of 52 cards which are placed face
down.
Calculate the probability, in its simplest form, of Sally winning the goldfish.

Therefore probability =

(b) Sally picks the Jack of diamonds and wins a goldfish.
Roy now chooses a card from the remaining cards. Is Roys probability of winning
a goldfish more, less or the sameas Sallys probability from part (a)? Explain your
answer.
11 12 (2)
Less. There are fewer face cards remaining only 11 from 51. ( is less than ).

(I) a + c 55
(II) 20a + 4c = 400 -> c = (400 20a) 4
c = 100 5a
Substitute into (I)
a + (100 5a) 55
100 4a 55
100 55 4a
45 4a
45 4 a
11.25 a
The largest number of children can go for the smallest number of adults.
Let a = 12
At first the plants grew well but after a while they died.
Which source of pollution is most likely to have caused the death of the plants?
Explain your answer, referencing each of the possible sources A,B,C and D.
(4)
The pollution from A, the factory waste is most likely to have caused the death of
the plants. The waste is pumped directly into the stream and will flow downstream
to the water plants.
B. The sewage works is unlikely to have caused the death of the plants, as it is
further downstream from the garden.
C. The pesticide is unlikely to have caused the death of the plants. Although
upstream from the garden, the pesticide kills insects and should not harm plants.
D. The railway does not interfere with the stream and is unlikely to have an effect
on the pollution in the stream.
For each of the following, circle the word which best completes each of the
following.
(a) In the nucleus of a cell, genes are part of (1)
(c) Studying the similarities and differences between organisms allows us (1)
to the organisms.
Chemistry
3. Limestone is used for statues and buildings. Limestone contains calcium
carbonate (CaCO3).
(a) (i) Suggest one problem quarrying limestone will cause for people living (1)
nearby.
Destruction of habitats/fewer trees to absorb carbon dioxide/ air, visual
and noise pollution/ more traffic
(ii) Suggest one benefit of quarrying limestone for people living nearby. (1)
Mass lost in g
1.4g
(iii) Suggest one reason why the mass lost was not the same for the three (1)
experiments.
Temperature of flame may have varied/different purity of
limestone/incorrect measurement of mass/heated for different times
(c) The word equation for the reaction when calcium carbonate is heated
is:
2.2g
(iii) Describe how to test a gas to show that it is carbon dioxide. (2)

4. A student used a laser to investigate the change of direction of light as it entered
a glass block.
The apparatus is shown below. The path of a ray of light as it enters the glass
block is shown.
(a) The student marked crosses to show the path of the ray of light that left (2)
the glass block.
Use a ruler to help you to draw the path of the ray of light through and
out of the glass block.
Straight line through the glass block to meet the edge of the block.
A straight line drawn through the two crosses meeting the edge of the
block.
(b) Light from lasers can damage your eyes. (1)
Suggest one safety precaution that the student should have taken
during his investigation.
Safety glasses/goggles, not looking directly at the laser
(c) The student measured angle a and angle b when the ray of light was
incident at 5 different angles. He measured each set of values once. The
students results are shown in the graph.
(c) The students line of best fit is incorrect. Give one reason why. (1)
Too many points above the line, no points below the line ideally should
have same number of points on each side of the line
(d) The student measured 5 different values of angle a in his investigation. (2)
Suggest two ways the student could improve his investigation
