Follow-On

Vision: What will be different in classrooms next week as a result of this

session?

Teachers will: Boost PR by using unbundled and follow on Cold Call

questions at two moments in their lesson

Students will: Answer questions immediately and successfully, regardless

of if their hands are raised

Anchor Clip
Section Purpose: To give a model and provide a reminder of the key elements
of effective execution of a technique that has already been introduced.
Anchor Guidance: An effective anchor clip should illustrate the specific aspect of the
technique that teachers will be practicing.

Focal question: How does Gary use Cold Call to boost PR in this clip?

Key ideas to surface in discussion (take from TLaC provided

clip notes):
Context: In this clip, Gary Lauderdale, formerly a 6th grade math
teacher from a school in Houston Independent School District
(HISD), uses a series of Cold Calls to facilitate an oral reviews math
problems that students completed.

Evidence of/Ways He Boosts Participation Ratio:

Gary Cold Calls his students to review the work the students have
just completed.
Every student is ready with an answer, which is evidence that they
are following along with the class and an indication of high
Participation Ratio.
Garys warm, positive demeanor throughout this sequence of Cold
Call invites participation and makes it safe for students to reveal
their answers (e.g., I see a lot of good work so I know were going
to be successful).
Gary unbundles his Cold Call questions by repeatedly asking
students to identify the next step in the problem hes reviewing. In
doing so, he keeps Pacing strong and Participation Ratio high.
Gary also does most of his Cold Calls from the back of the
classroom with student facing the board. This ensures that the
students arent focusing on him and whether theyll be called on,
but rather they are focused on the math. This also ups
accountability because it makes his Cold Calls appear even more
unpredictable.
The students are used to his routine of Cold Calling; theyre all
ready to answer on the spot.
Gary ensures students are listening to each other by asking the
students to build on each other through his use of Follow-on Cold
Calls.

Technique Note Review

Purpose: To strengthen teachers internalizing the key principles for
effectively executing the technique and build common language for
practice and use of the technique
Unbundle and Scatter: Break big, complex questions apart
into smaller connected ones and parse them out to multiple
students. This improves Pacing, builds momentum, and
causes students to listen to one another.
Techniqu
Follow-On: Cold Call a student to ask him/her to develop or
e Note reflect on another students answer. Show that student
Review contributions matter by asking Cold Call questions about the
(3 minutes) things students add to discussion: Do you agree, James?
o Benefits:
Causes students to be accountable for listening
to one another
Causes students to view answers as always
having potential to be developed

Jot down an example of each of these from Garys video. Share out.
Plan, Plan, Then Practice
Purpose: To support quality practice by providing teachers 1-3 minutes
then of planning before jumping into practice. Practice is the essential
component of PD its how teachers build skill and gain confidence and
Practice clarity to use a technique live with scholars.

questions.
Follow-on: Prompt students to respond to previous peers comment
Keep the tone positive and convey an eagerness to hear their
thinking

Script Your Model (including feedback):

teacher; 20 seconds feedback; 60 seconds re-teach; Total for all 4
12 minutes

Action Plan
Purpose: To support and hold colleagues accountable for a specific time
Action to implement the practiced technique.

Plan Exit Ticket:

(2 minutes) When Ill Practice: One more time Ill practice these questions before
