Learning Objective(s) (aligns with Competency):


1. Practice making positive decisions about our academics
2. Create SMART goals about NMs

3. Identify at least 1 adult we can go to for help

Materials: Posters for Decision Making Activity, Candy, Markers, Notecards, PowerPoint, Laptop
and Projector, SMART Goal Graphic Organizer
Procedure:
1.Email teachers Pre Assessment 1 week prior to presentation and monitor for
completion. Remind teachers as needed.
2. At beginning of presentation, or prior to scholars entering classroom,
distribute notecards and instruct scholars to hold on to one.
3. Slide 1: Introduce yourself, role in the school, and reason for visiting
4. Slide 2: Ask, so, what will we be talking about today? Use candy as
needed to get volunteers to read objectives. When introducing standards,
remind scholars that just as teachers have goals for student learning, so do
counselors; again, ask scholars to read standards.
5. Slide 3: Introduce group agreements: remind scholars that the group
agreements may look like the ones their teachers have established. Ask scholars
to give examples of what each agreement looks like. Before we get started,
just want to remind everyone of a few group agreements known here at DLA.

Agreement 3- what does that mean? Popcorn to someone else
6. Slide 4: Everyone should have a notecard, please let me know if you need
one and Ill bring one to you. Instruct students to write their name legibly on
one side; if there are duplicate names, ask them to write their last name as
well. Then, ask students to flip their notecard and think about a time when
they were successful in a class this past year. Ask them to answer the
questions on their notecard. Remind students that they have been successful
at some point, regardless of the class. Remind scholars that it is important to
look at the small victories to remember all we are capable of. Ask for a
volunteer to pleaase collect notecards and bring them to you.
7. Slide 5: Announce, classes at DLA are hard. How many of you agree? Still,
Classes at Del Lago are meant to prepare you for what? Wait for a scholar to
answer for a college education. Then, remind students of the prior
presentations theyve received from the Academic Dean regarding NM policy
and how today we will be focusing on making decisions about NMs.
8. Slide 6: Before showing answers, use notecards to call on scholars to give
you anwers.
9. Slide 7: Tell the person next to you, why is it important to clear NMs? Come
back to the group and ask for 3 volunteers to share what their peer said.
10. Slide 8: Introduce decision making and use notecards to have students
read 4 steps
11. Slide 9: Call on student to read scenario, call on different volunteer to
read options. Tell scholars they will be divided into 4 groups where they will
be given 5 minutes to decide as a group the pros and cons for their assigned
decision. Then, they will report their decision to the rest of the class. The
group that you see working best as a team will get candy.
12. Have scholars count off by 4s. Send them to their respective corner and
start timer and walk around highlighting teams that are working together and
give ideas to those that are struggling. Give 1 minute warning
give 30 second warning.
13. Call student from notecard, ask them to hold their poster. Have someone
else from their team read the decision assigned. Ask them to popcorn to a
different team mate to read the pros and another teammate to read the cons.
Thank them and ask if they want the team on the right or left to go next. Go
on until all groups present. Fill in ideas as needed. Point out the importance of
analyzing pros and con when making academic decisions.
14. Slide 10: Move on to the game plan and do choral reading of the SMART
acronym. Distribute SMART goal graphic organizer.
15. Slide 11: Use notecards to call on a volunteer to read S example. Popcorn
to read the rest of the letters.
16. Slide 12: Introduce support staff.
17. Slide 13: Use notecards or ask for a volunteer to read objectives. Ask for
thumbs up if they think we covered the objective. Continue in similar manner
with standards.
18. Thank the teacher and scholars for their time and attention. Remind
scholars to fill out post assessment when the teacher sends link.

Knowledge:
- % Students who can identify a component of a SMART goal
- %Students know who can identify an adult at DLA that can support them

Outcome Data:
Short Term: Decrease in # of No Marks among 10th graders by end of Spring
2017.
Long Term: # of scholars that are A-G eligible by 12th grade.

Follow Up: One on ones as requested by Academic Advisor and scholar.
