1) A rotating shaft carries 4 unbalanced masses m1 ,m2,m3 and m4 of

magnitudes 20kg , 15kg , 14 kg revolving at radii 60mm , 80mm ,


100mm and 60mm respectively .The masses m2,m3,m4 revolve in
planes 100mm , 180mm and 300mm resp. from the plane of mass m1
and are angularly at 65 , 145 , and 270 resp. measured in
anticlockwise direction , from mass m1 looking from mass end of the
shaft. The shaft is to be dynamically balanced by 2 masses, both
located at 70mm radii and revolving in the plane midway between
those of masses m1, m2 and midway between those of masses m3 and
m4. Determine the magnitudes of the balancing masses and their

If the shaft is balanced by two counter masses located at 100mm radii and
revolving in planes midway between the planes (1 and 2) and (3 and
4), determine the magnitude of the masses and their respective angular

3) A shaft carries four rotating masses A, B, C, and D in this order along


this axis.

RA =18cm, RB =24cm, RC =12cm, RD =15cm, mB= 30kg, mC =50kg and


mD =40kg.

The planes counting B and C are 30cm apart, the angular spacing of
planes containing C and D are 90 and 210 respectively relative to B
measured in the same plane. If the shaft and masses are be in
complete dynamic balance, find:

a) Mass and angular position of mass A

4) A shaft of span 3m between two bearings carries two masses of 15kg
and 30kg acting at the end of arms 0.5m 0.6m respectively. The planes
in which these masses rotate are 1m and 2m from the left end bearing.
The angle between the arms is 60. The speed of rotation of the shaft
is 240rpm. If masses are balanced by two counter masses rotating with
the shaft acting at radii of 0.25m and placed at 0.3m from each
bearing center. Determine the magnitude of the two balance masses

5) In four stroke, five cylinder, inline reciprocating engine, the mass of the
reciprocating parts per cylinder is 15kg. The stroke is 200mm, the
length of connecting rod is 450mm and the cylinders are spaced at
375mm pitch. The firing order of engine is 1-2-3-4-5 and the engine
runs at 600rpm.

Examine the engine for engine for the balance of primary and
secondary forces and couples. Determine the maximum values of
these with reference to central plane of the engine and the position of
the central crank at which these maximum values occur. MU DEC

6) Investigate unbalance forces and couples in 5 cylinder inline engine


having similar reciprocating parts equal center distance and cranks
successively at 72 apart. If reciprocating mass per cylinder is 2kg and
crank radius 50mm, connecting rod length 150mm and cylinder center
distance are 100mm , determine maximum primary and secondary
unbalance at 150 rpm and state the position of central crank when this

7) The firing order of six cylinder vertical four stroke inline engine is 1, 4,
2, 6, 3, and 5. The piston stroke is 80mm and the length of each
connecting rod is 180mm. the pitch distance between the cylinder
center lines are 80mm, 80mm, 120mm and 80mm and 80mm
respectively. The reciprocating mass per cylinder is 1.2kg and the
engine speed is 2400 rpm. Determine the out of balance primary and
secondary forces and couples on the engine taking a plane midway
between the cylinder 3 and 4 as the reference plane. DEC 2013
8) Six cylinder four inline engine has a firing order 1-4-5-2-3-6. Firing
order takes place with equal angular interval. The mass of
reciprocating parts per cylinder is 2kg. Stroke of 100mm and
connecting rod length 200mm. the cylinder center lines are spaced at
300 mm apart. The crank shaft speed is 300 rpm. Examine the engine
for the balance of primary and secondary forces and couples. If not
complete balanced then determine unbalanced forces and couples.

9) A shaft carries four masses A, B, C and D placed in parallel planes,
perpendicular to the shaft axis and in the same order along the shaft.
The masses of b and C are 36kg and 25kg and both are assumed to be
concentrated at a radius of 150mm, while the masses A and D are both
at a radius of 200mm. the angle between the B and C is 100 0 and that
between B and A is 1900 , both angles being measured in the same
sense. The plane containing A and B are 250mm apart and those
containing B and C are 500mm apart. If the shaft is to be in complete
dynamic balance. Find:

The masses of A and D.

The distance between planes C and D.

10) A rotating unbalance system consists of a disk of 2kg. which is


eccentric to the axis of shaft by 2mm. adding two counter masses of
1kg, each at an axial distance of 1cm and 2cm. respectively from
either side of the disc, the system is completely balanced, find the
radial location of the counter masses if all the masses lie in the same
axial plane. MAY2015
11) Four pulleys are equally spaced along a shaft and each has an
out of balance mass at the same radius. The out of balance mass in
second pulley is 3kg and the third and fourth out of balance masses
are at 750 and 2000 to it. Determine the masses in the first, third and
fourth pulleys and also the angle of the first mass relative to second if
complete balance is to be obtain. MAY15
