VIBRATION MEASURING
INSTRUMENTS

1. A spring mass damper system, having an undamped natural frequency of

100hz and a damping constant of 20 N-s/m, is used as an accelerometer
to measure the vibration of a machine operating at a speed of 3000rpm. If
the actual acceleration is 10 m/s2 and the recorded acceleration is 9m/s2.
Find the mass and spring constant of accelerometer

2. An accelerometer with mass 0.01Kg and a damping ratio 0.707 is to be

designed. What should be undamped natural frequency of the system so
that the measurement error never exceeds 2%?. The vibration signal,
which is to be measured, have a frequency as high as 200hz.

3. An accelerometer has an natural frequency 15khz, Determine the highest

frequency it can measure within 1% accuracy. Assume damping ratio 0.7.

4. A commercial type vibration pick up has natural frequency of 5.75hz and a

damping factor of 0.65. what is lowest frequency beyond which the
amplitude can be measure within 2 percent error?

5. A seismic instrument is mounted on machine at 1000 rpm the natural

frequency of seismic instrument is 20 rad/sec. The instruments record
relative amplitude of 0.5mm. compute displacement, velocity and
acceleration of machine. Damping of seismic instrument is neglected.

6. An accelerometer has a suspended mass of 0.01kg with a damped natural

frequency of vibration of 150hz. When mounted on an engine undergoing
as acceleration of 9.81 m/sec2 at an operating speed of 6000rpm the
acceleration is recorded as 9.5m/s2 by an instrument. Find the damping
constant(c) and spring stiffness(k) of the accelerometer.

7. A spring-mass system, having negligible damping, is used as a seismic
instrument. When mounted on a machine operating at 1000 rpm., the
steady state relative amplitude is recorded as 0.05mm. find the values of
