Volcanoes

Volcanoes often erupt with great force and spectacular fireworks displays. More than
five hundred volcanoes are still active throughout the world, but scientists are not
completely sure what causes them to erupt.
Most scientists, however, believe that magma – hot, liquid rock deep inside the earth –
begins to move under the great pressure of the earth’s crust. As the magma becomes more
active, it gets hotter and hotter and expands in volume. Water vapor and other gases are
given off by the molten rock, and these build up tremendous pressures.
