The Outsiders - Reading, Annotating, and Writing Assignment

Your objective is to read The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. The book was written in the 1960s, so
some of the vocabulary may be unfamiliar to you. Try to use context clues to help, or consult the
dictionary that I borrowed from a great teacher, Ms. Kirr. You have access to it on myUSM
under the topic, The Outsiders. I have included a reading schedule in order to help you stay on
track, but you are welcome to read further and finish the book early.

When you finish The Outsiders, we will begin discussions. In order for these discussions to be
rich and meaningful, it is important that you have actively read the book. For each chapter, I will
expect at least two annotations - feel free to do more. They should be written directly on
Post-It notes. Your annotations need to include T ough Questions and Contrasts &
Contradictions. You may also record other signposts, reactions, questions, and ideas about
the story.

Sometimes, you will be able to read in class. Therefore, it is important that you always have
your book with you. Even if you are absent or we miss class, you will still be responsible for
keeping up with the schedule and writing at least two Post-Its for each chapter.

You may NOT read the book as an ORB!!!

IcanstatementsforTheOutsiders:
