The grooms cake itself comes from the Victorian Era in England.
The wedding cake and brides cake was also found in this era and country.
Traditionally the grooms cake was served to the groomsman and the brides cake was
served to the bridesmaids.
Brides liked the grooms cake because most of the attention during the wedding was on
them and with this cake a little bit of attention is given to the groom.
Traditional grooms cakes are made with dark chocolate and sometimes also have liquor
and fruits
The earliest grooms cake was just a fruit cake. This was back when the wedding cake
was a fruit cake as well.
When todays processed flour and baking soda came around todays wedding cakes and
grooms cakes began to appear.
In tradition, the grooms cake is not served at the wedding, but if the wedding cake is the
only desert you have, the grooms cake will typically be served as well.
More typically the grooms cake is cut up, boxed, and given to the unmarried women.
Legend says that if the unmarried women sleeps with the grooms cake under her pillow,
she will dream of her future husband.
Ingredients like processed flour and baking soda came around in the 18th century
The grooms cake was brought over during the American colonial times and thrived more
in the south.

This source was very in-depth about the long history of the grooms cake where it came
from, how it was traditionally made, the first grooms cake, how new grooms cakes
began to come along, how it is served in a typical wedding.

Costs for Grooms cake is around the same cost as the cost for a wedding cake.
For an ordinary, single tiered cake or sheet cake, its $1-2 per slice; for a cake that has
fondant and dcor it can be up to $8-10 per slice.
In a recent article in NYCweddings.com it was reported someone ordered a NASCAR
inspired cake and they were given three prices:
$50 for a small, one-tired round cake with a picture of a car or NASCAR photo on it;
$260 for a single layered sheet-cake shaped as a car with nice details on the car;
$590 for a three dimensional race car cake made with fondant
Prices also vary if the cake is cut into reception slices when some of the guests have
already left, or if the cake is served as a desert because these slices will be much larger
than the reception slices
A very basic rectangular, round, or squared sheet cake or one-tiered cake costs around
$.80-1.50 a slice
This could also be seen as $50-150 to serve up to 100 guests.
These cakes have maybe a couple of really simplistic designs or maybe a small three
dimensional design.
At a wedding cake store in North Carolina there was a single-layered sheet cake topped
with the image of a football that serves up to 70 people being sold for 60 people.
There was another single tiered cake with a championship logo that served around 40
people for $55.
A three-dimensional cake or multi-tiered with different kinds of flavors and cool designs
cost $2-6 per slice.
Thats up to $120-$600 for 60-100 guests.

This source taught me about the average costs for a grooms cake for the quality and
serving size of the cake.

Learning how to design a traditional tuxedo grooms cake
This cake is chocolate with fudge decorated with chocolate wedding icing
The ruffles and white shirt on the cake are iced with butter cream.
Requirments needed consist of:
14 inch chocolate fudge cake
Chocolate fondant for ruffles
White fondant icing for shirts white center ruffle
Chocolate buttons
Bow tie shaped out of fondant
Make the chocolate fudge cake and cut in half and fill with the icing for the filling. Cover
the cake with the icing to coat the cake and leave overnight. To make the ruffle place
cornstarch on the rolling pin and roll out the chocolate fondant icing.
Roll out the chocolate fondant icing on parchment paper. Lift up the paper and place a
chopping board underneath the chocolate at the angle shown. Make a ruffle for the other
side by reversing the angles. If it is easier for you make a cardboard template of the shape
of the white ruffle and roll out the white fondant icing to that approximate shape, and cut
to measure the template.
To make the dickie bow, Use rolled fondant chocolate icing and roll out a ball for the
center, and two triangles for the bow on either side, with the back of a knife make an
indent in the triangles to make the bow have a three-dimensional affect

Place the white ruffle in position as a guideline. Then place the two dark ruffles at the
side and make an indent in the cake as to their position. Remove the white center and
anchor the dark chocolate at an angle using a stiff chocolate butter cream icing for the
backing. Adhere the white ruffle to the center with dabs of butter cream. Decorate the
front with buttons using chocolate buttons or chips. Add the bow tie with icing.
