Staff Development Project

TE 875
Jodi Storer

Topic Selection:

Learning to use the Common Sense Media web page for teaching

digital citizenship skills in the classroom. This site is ideal for teaching

topics such as cyberbullying, privacy and security, creative credit, and

much more.

With the recent addition of laptops into all the classrooms from grades

2 12; the administration decided that it was the responsibility of the

classroom teachers and media specialist to make sure students were

being safe on the internet. With this new technology access granted at

school we want to make sure we are keeping our students safe at

home and at school so it was decided that we must teach digital

citizenship skills.

Format of Staff Development:

This will be a half-day workshop on a mandatory professional

development day. These days are built in to the school year and

teachers are required to attend. The other half of the day will be spent

updating and revising language curriculum in the afternoon.

Both workshops will be held in the media center with educators being

given donuts, juice and coffee for breakfast and an hour break for

lunch on their own before coming back for the afternoon session.

Activities:

In the morning of the staff development day, we will begin with an

introduction to the Common Sense Media web page found at: http:

www.commonsensemedia.org. The LMS will show the Digital

Citizenship song and video. The media specialist will give reasons

why the site is helpful and why we are using it to demonstrate what we

want the classroom teachers to show and teach their students in the

classroom.

The LMS will demonstrate some of the many useful things available on

the site to teachers. This demonstration will include: how to find

already made lesson plans for different grade levels; how to find and

show educational videos; and how to browse the site overall. Most

importantly the LMS will share the recent release of the Digital Literacy

and Citizenship Curriculum, which is a set of eight interactive,

multimedia iBooks Textbooks, available for free in the iBooks Store.

Following the demonstration, teachers will be asked to explore the site

and find helpful things for them to use in their classrooms. Each

teacher will also find an already prepared lesson plan on digital

citizenship skills that they can use in their classroom. A few teachers

will be asked to share their lessons with the group.

Organization of Event:

The library media specialist will be organizing this training with help

from the technology director. During the training, the LMS along with

the technology director will assist individuals as they explore the

Common Sense Media webpage.

The principal will buy the donuts and the juice for the breakfast, and

will give teachers an hour lunch instead the usual hour lunch.

Evaluation and Follow-up:

The follow-up will consist with stressing the importance of using this

site and encouraging teachers to use it in their classrooms. Teachers

will be asked to do a short questionnaire on a Google doc in about a

month to report how much the Common Sense Media site is being used

in our school. There will also be a place on the document to share their

favorite lesson plan.
