1.0 BACKGROUND STUDY

Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM) is one of the public universities that
focuses on engineering, science and technology. It was ranked in the top 50 out of 200
universities in the QS Asian University Rankings 2010 according to Nunzio Quacquarelli in the
STAR online (2010, May 16). According to Zamri Noranai and Mohamad Najib Kammalluden in
their study of Building Energy Index in UTHM, its main campus total gross floor area is
219828.734 meter square. It is capable to cater up to 12000 students and 3000 staff. The
buildings are located far apart from each other. Therefore, most of the upper year students that
live outside of UTHM residential college drive their own cars in UTHM to ease their
conveyance. However, in 2017, as many as 16 065 students and 498 international students have
enrolled in UTHM. This shows that the number of students have exceeded the total capacity of
the campus. This also means that the number of students driving their own cars increases.

In UTHM, the buildings near the main gate, especially B1 are very well-known to
students because they are often used as classrooms for the first-year students. However, they are
not limited to the first-year students only. Upper year students who can bring their own cars into
the campus also have classes there. The nearest available parking spaces for students which is in
front of Dewan Kuliah B2 is big, but it is not enough to accommodate the large number of
students cars. Besides, even people other than students like staffs and sometimes people who
sell their goods at Dataran Anggerik during events, also park their cars there. This has greatly
reduced the available parking spaces for students which are near the buildings at the main gate.

Therefore, it is essential for us to conduct this study in order to find out the causes and
effects of lack of parking spaces at B2 area to the students. This can be achieved through some
research among UTHM students by asking their opinion.

2.0 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This research is undertaken to find:

1. The factors that contribute to lack of parking spaces at B2 area are the

provided area is not enough to accommodate for the students who have classes

there, no signboard specifying the parking spaces are for students only and

people other than students.

2. The effects of lack of parking spaces to the students at B2 area are

being late to go to class, parking their cars not at the provided area and being

sued by the authorities.

3.0 OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The research objectives for this study are:

1. To identify the effects of lack of the parking space for students at B2 area.
2. To determine the factors that contribute to parking issues.

4.0 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This paper is about a study that focuses on the causes and effects of the lack of parking
spaces for students near B2 building in UTHM. The findings of this study will redound to the
benefits of students by considering that sufficient parking spaces are important for the students.
This is due to many students driving their own cars, staffs and also other people who parked at
B2 area causing amount of parking spaces available there become limited during peak times.
This studys goal is designed to help students to find out the causes and effects of limited parking
spaces at B2 area.

5.0 LIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY

This study is limited to all UTHM students from second year and above, those who
brought their cars and park their cars at B2 parking area. Next, we limited the number of
respondents for the questionnaire down to 50 persons. This studys duration will also be limited
until the end of May 2017.

6.0 METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY

This study will be conducted based on quantitative approach, where we try to establish as
much as information collected from the sample. We will also be more concentrated on
identifying the problem by collecting the data from our sample survey questionnaire and online
survey questionnaire that can be transformed into usable statistics. In the questionnaire, the
question will be focusing on the effects and the factors that contribute to the lack of parking
spaces at B2 area.
