Hello, my name is Lori Williams and I am a senior student here at Saint Mary of the Woods
College where I am pursuing a bachelors degree in early childhood education in the non-
licensure program.
Obtaining this degree has been a personal goal of mine for several years. Striving to remain a
competent, caring, professional educator while teaching within moral, ethical and social
contexts has been my main focus throughout this whole journey of education.
Teaching is very social in many ways. When a teacher can draw the students into their
community socially, it can make the lesson much more meaningful. For example, while
completing a unit project on harvest, I realized just how social teaching can be. The lesson plan
on harvest demonstrated competence in EDPG 11 by exposing the children socially, morally and
ethically to the farming community. The children experienced how important farming is and
interacted with various members of the farming community.
Most recently during my student teaching at Head Start, I engaged the children socially by
teaching them a lesson on clothing. During this lesson, I brought my own racing suit and
helmet for them to see what a race car driver would wear. By taking off the teacher hat for a
few minutes to share with the children my passion on the weekends, their enthusiasm and
interest in the lesson grew. If I had not presented this lesson, they may never have realized
that teachers could also be race car drivers. I demonstrated my competence in EDPG 11 by
exposing the children to the fact that an ethically, morally correct teacher can also socially be
involved in outside activities such as racing and still wear the teacher hat successfully.
During the holiday season my facility, Loris Ton O Fun Daycare, Inc. collaborated with the
Salvation Army for a very successful book drive. This demonstrated my competence in EDPG
11 by socially, morally and ethically working with another agency for a common goal. Our
common goal was to expose the families of Brown County to early literacy. By doing this book
drive, over 200 books were passed out along the parade route.
In addition to being a competent, caring, and professional educator, I have learned to positively
impact what students learn and retain for future reference. For example, I would like to
reference the harvest project once again as an example of how my teaching style was able to
positively affect P-12 student learning, the success of the harvest project was clearly measured
by viewing the video that we made as a class. The children went from believing that harvest
was tractors cutting corn to combines harvesting wheat, soy beans and corn. In the original
web, the children thought that harvest was just corn. After the project they realized that
harvest was other things such as soy beans and wheat as well. The children learned many
things about harvest and learned that harvest involved much more than just big green
tractors.
While doing my field experience in first grade, I taught a lesson on St Patricks Day. We learned
several symbols about the holiday and then played bingo. This was an example of how my
teaching was able to positively affect the P-12 learning because they had to know the symbols
in order to play the game
Another lesson in my first grade experience dealt with learning to draw a simple map. The
children learned to make a key and draw a map of the classroom. Out of 24 students in the
classroom, 17 of them received 100 % on the map. The remaining ones all received passing
grades of 83% and 90%. This is a clear example of how my teaching was positive.

As a competent, caring, professional educator I was pleased with the outcome of all of these
projects and the lessons that were taught morally, ethically and socially. Success was based on
looking through the many pictures that were taken and the memories that we shared, knowing
that I had fulfilled my obligation as an educator.
This self-assessment video was very challenging to me because of the uncertainty of what was
needed. What I am referring to is the fact that we only had the 2 seminars. I realize that it was
in the D2L, however because it seemed like so much and was so new to me, it was my error in
not asking more questions sooner. I understand there was instruction, however when your
brain in already in overload mode, it is hard. I am just suggesting for future that maybe seminar
be more than just twice. Possibly meet 4 times.
