I. INTRODUCTION Carbohydrates are the most abundant organic compound in the plant world. They act as storehouse of chemical energy and are components of supportive structure in plants and connective tissues in animals. Carbohydrates can be classified base on number of sugar units in a total chain. Monosaccharide are simple sugars with multiple OH group. Monosaccharide containing an aldehyde group are classified as aldose while ketone containing group are classified as ketose. Disaccharides is a carbohydrate containing two monosaccharide units joined by a glycosidic bond. Polysaccharide is a carbohydrate containing a large amount of monosaccharide units. Some carbohydrates test are based on their reducing properties because of the presence reducing aldehyde or ketone groups. Some tests are based on the formation of furfural derivatives in presence of concentrated acids. To verify the above concept, an experiment was conducted with the following objectives: (1) Observe chemical behavior of sugar solutions containing carbohydrates and (2) Qualitatively analyze carbohydrates.
