Work effectively and cooperatively completing allocated tasks in pairs.

Teachers Prior Preparation/Organisation: Provision for students at educational risk:

Resources/References
Time Motivation and Introduction:
Align these with the
Greet students and state what will be learnt today segment where they
2.00pm
will be introduced.
Ask the question
does anyone know what skip counting is?
Explain skip counting briefly; provide a definition along the
lines of
Skip counting is a technique in which we only count some
numbers and not others in a sequence. For example, counting
in 10s, 5s or 2s
Elaborate on the usefulness of skip counting
Say
Skip counting is useful for two main reasons
it is a quicker way to count lots of objects and
it helps us learn our times tables
Explain to class that today they will be learning to count in 2s
up to 30. Explain that this learning will be done in pairs.
Ipad and counters
Explain that ipads will be used and one person will film while required for
the other person counts out loud. demonstration

Demonstrate activity to be completed and state story/context

behind learning- Get a volunteer student to film (as partner in
group should) and briefly demonstrate counting in 2s. Ensure
that students are aware of how to film on ipad.
The story that should be created is
Today we are going to pretend that jellybeans are pet food!
Everyone is going to be given a pet and we are going to have
to count out 30 jellybeans for our pet to eat! To count these 30
jellybeans we are going to skip count in 2s. We are going to do
this because counting every single jellybean is too slow and we
are in a rush! We want to count these jellybeans fast to make
sure that our pets dont stay hungry.
Make students aware that their video will be marked- say
By the end of the lesson you should hand in 2 videos; one of
yourself and one of your partner counting in 2s. These videos
will be marked- you will get good marks if you count in 2s to
2.10pm 30 well and if you work well with your partner.

Lesson Steps (Lesson content, structure, strategies & Key Questions):

Put students into groups via calling names and making students
swap seats- students need to sit near their partner Ipad with working
video camera (1 per
Hand out one ipad to each pair and ask the pairs to pick who group)
will be counting and who will be filming first
Ensure this decision has been agreed upon before moving any
further into lesson
Template pet cards
Hand out pet cards and jelly beans to all students- reinforce attached
students by saying that if they finish this lesson and work well
in groups they can eat their jellybeans Jellybeans (or other
counters 30+ per
One student in pair to count jellybeans out loud (in 2s to 30)
student)
while other student in pair films. (fluency)
Student counting jellybeans needs to ensure that they only feed
their pet the 30 jellybeans required so that their pet is full of
food (problem solving)
During students counting time teacher to walk around Pet extension cards
classroom and assist/supervise. (see attached template)
Those who complete the task quickly should be given the pet
extension cards and be asked to skip counting in 5s to 30
2.25pm (group member to film on ipad; then swap)
Teacher to stop students when it appears that students have
finished and ask them to swap roles i.e. the counter to become

the ipad camera controller etc.

Time should be given for next student in pair to count out
jellybeans (counters) for pet (in 2s to 30) as previous group
member did when it was their turn.
Once again, the group member who isnt counting should be
filming with ipad.
After second counter has finished the task ensure students
2.35pm videos are left on ipads (for teacher to mark) and ipads are
handed in to the teacher.
Lesson Closure:(Review lesson objectives with students)
Ask students the question
Can anyone tell me what we learnt today?
when answer is given ask
Can anyone remember why skip counting was important to
learn?
finally ask
Who thinks they will go home and use skip counting when
they need to count out things quickly? (provides
context/space where children can implement this learning
further)

Transition: (What needs to happen prior to the next lesson?)

2.45pm Clean up jellybeans (or counters) whether this be through
students eating them or through counters being put away
Students to return to their own desks- move out of their pairs
Marking key attached
Assessment: (Were the lesson objectives met? How will these be
judged?)
Videos filmed by peer of skip counting to be marked by teacher
using marking key attached
Group work effectiveness evaluated in class through teacher
observation. Notes are made and students are marked via
marking key attached
