Minutes for OFAD Meeting

Office Administration Students

Durham College, Whitby Campus
March 3, 2017, 10:00am- 10:30am

Call to Order
This meeting was called to order at 10:00am on March 3, 2017 by Hazel Doughty at
Durham Colleges Whitby Campus.

Introductions
All guests were introduced in this meeting. The guests who were in attendance
included:
Hazel Doughty from Office Administration Executive, covering document
creation
Shayna Canfield from Office Administration General, covering workplace
attire
Zoe Day from Office Administration Health Services covering eportfolios
Kaydian Clarke from Office Administration Health Services covering academic
integrity
Rhiannon Ferrier from Office Administration Health Services covering career
opportunities

Document Creation
The programs that are commonly used in the workplace are Microsoft Suite, Office
Libre, Microsoft Word and Excel (which is useful for executive office positions).
Medical settings often have their own software, however sometimes Microsoft Word
is also used. In this program so far, we have covered how to write and format
memos and letters professionally. It is important to use proofing tools such as
spellcheck to ensure that there are no errors in a document before it is submitted.

Professional Attire in the Workplace

In a medical setting, proper attire could include scrubs, non-slip shoes, gloves and a
mask. In an executive setting, professional attire such as dress pants and skirts
would be appropriate. In general, it is agreed that covering cleavage and wearing
appropriate size heels is important. Hair should also be neat and presentable, and
makeup should be professional and not extreme.

Creating an Eportfolio
You can create an eportfolio on the website Weebly. On this webpage you can create
difference sections for EES Skills, on these pages you can add text boxes, links,
pictures and documents. Artifacts that showcase your skills to potential employers
should be included. It is important to explain the artifact and how it represents that
specific skill.

Academic Integrity
Durham College has its own academic integrity policy. If you are caught cheating or
plagiarizing there could be an alert put on your file. If the College feels that you are
not being honest, they may have you meet with the Dean or professors about the
alert. A mark of zero will be given if an assignment is plagiarized. Plagiarizing can
also lead to failing a course or getting suspended from the program.

Career Opportunities
Career opportunities for Office Administration Health Services students could
include working in a hospital, doctors office or in transcription. For executive
students career opportunities could include being the right-hand man to a higher up
position. School board reception could also be a potential career opportunity. Wages
can range from $13-$30 an hour depending on the experience and education of the
person. The hours of operation of an employer could affect the work schedule such
as working in a hospital (open 24 hours).

Discussion and Approval

It was discussed that all guests in attendance for the meeting would further
research their topics to bring forth new information for the next meeting. The goals
for each person are as followed:

Hazel D: Will look into more documents that can be used in the workplace
Shayna C: Will look into Durham Colleges workplace dress code policy
Zoe D: Will look into what employers look for in an eportfolio
Kaydian C: Will look into statistics in academic alerts at Durham College
Rhiannon F: Will look into more career opportunities for executive graduates

All information and motions in this meeting are agreed upon and approved.
