As a consequence of the Children Act, all staff appointed to
positions at Churchers College must undergo a check with
Disclosure and Barring Service. A copy of the school policy
on DBS is available on request. Two written references will
be required and any gaps in employment records will be
investigated. It is also necessary for all staff to notify the
Headmaster before the appointment of any convictions, or
other factors which may be relevant to their employment in
a school environment.

The School
Churchers College is an independent, co-
educational, HMC day school, which offers a
distinctive education to pupils from the age of 4
to 18. Currently there are 874 pupils in the Senior
School (11-18) and, on its own 14 acre site, 231
pupils in the Junior School (4-11) and a newly
opened Nursery.
As you would expect, our aim is to educate and
prepare young people in order that they may
participate successfully and responsibly in society.
We aim to provide a high standard of education
for all pupils based upon traditional values and
academic standards, personal discipline and
the development of self-confidence. This is
accomplished within a caring environment, on
an open site with the beautiful South Downs as
a backdrop and a delightfully positive balance
between academic studies and enterprise and
adventure outside the classroom.
Churchers College is a dynamic and innovative
place to work; academically strong with over
82% A* to B grades at A level and 65% A* and
A grades at GCSE in 2016. The academic side of
school life is complemented with a very strong
co-curricular programme. With up to 22 sports
teams representing the school in any given term,
sport has strength in numbers as well as ability.
Music and drama also flourish with over half of
the children involved in individual music lessons,
highly accomplished ensembles, and children
involved in drama at all ages and all places
including major West End productions. With a
voluntary after school CCF contingent of 200+
cadets, and approximately 200 students involved
in DofE, as well as extensive opportunities for
major annual adventurous expeditions, the
range and eclectic nature of the activities outside
the classroom is a significant bonus to life at
Churchers for both staff and students alike.
The school has a long history and is a prominent
establishment in the beautiful market town of
Petersfield. Churchers College was founded in
1722 under the terms of the will made by Richard
Churcher, a local philanthropist. The terms of that
will instructed that 9 or 10 local boys were to be
fed, clothed and cared for in addition to receiving
free education which was to include English,
Mathematics and Navigation. Upon leaving the
College, boys were to be apprenticed into the
East India Company. Today the College is fully
independent and co-educational.
The Teachers
Churchers College teachers are without exception
gifted individuals who are able to inspire pupils
with their enthusiasm and subject knowledge.
They are committed to providing high quality
teaching as well as playing a full and purposeful
role in the Colleges extra-curricular programme.
Most are graduates with postgraduate certificates.
Those arriving without PGCE are encouraged and
supported to gain such qualifications soon after
appointment. In-service training and professional
development are strongly encouraged and
the College follows the national guidelines for
the induction of Newly Qualified Teachers.
We have a healthy balance of staff from NQTs
to very experienced teachers, as well as a
wide spread across the age range; the mix of
experience and background provides for a
happy, stimulating and rewarding environment.
Music Facilities
The Music School is an independent building
comprising a large classroom, a smaller teaching
room for GCSE and A level work, and a Rehearsal
Room, as well as the office and resources room.
Additionally, individual tuition takes place in the
four rooms of the Coach House, in the Chapel,
and in the Assembly Hall which houses a full-size
Yamaha concert grand piano. Both of the teaching
rooms are equipped with hi-fi, computers and
music keyboards, and both have computer-driven
interactive white boards. In addition there is a
new technology studio situated in the Sixth Form
Centre.
Music is part of the Faculty of Creative and
Performing Arts, comprising Drama and Music.
Faculty meetings offer support within the
departments and a channel for representation at
the meetings of Heads of Faculty.
Music within the
Curriculum
Music is taught to all pupils in the first three
years and is an option at GCSE and A level and
holds a high reputation for the standard of its
results. A Level Music Technology is also taught
in the 6th Form. Our Advanced Musicians Course
EDUC ATIONA L
(AMC) stretches our most advanced musicians
academically and gives a further option for taking
a music theory or written dipolma.
Music and Drama
The College Musical is an annual event which
takes place in the school Sports Hall, and typically
involves large numbers of pupils, accompanied
by the College Orchestra or appropriate
ensemble. Recent productions have included
Beauty and the Beast (2016), High School
Musical (2015), Footloose (2014), We Will Rock
You (2014), Guys & Dolls (2012), Grease (2010),
Bugsy Malone (2009), The Hot Mikado (2007),
Barnum (2005), Pal Joey (2003), West Side
Story (2001) and Oh! What a Lovely War (1999).

Teacher of Music
The Department currently has a Director of
Music, Assistant Director of Music (Academic),
Assistant Director of Music (Performance),
Teacher of Music and a Music Administrator. The
successful candidate will assist the Director of
Music by taking a leading role in the provision of
an extensive public performance programme and
by teaching Key Stage 3 classes through to A Level.
The successful candidate will possess excellent
piano skills and will assist with rehearsing the
numerous ensembles throughout the school.
They will take an active role in developing an
annual performance programme and two year
strategy for major performances and productions.
Extra-Curricular Music
The Music Department is a vibrant and busy
community. Weekly rehearsals are held for the
orchestra, wind band, big band, string orchestra,
junior wind band, brass ensembles, flute choir,
clarinet group, guitar ensemble, saxophone
ensemble, string quartets, blues group, senior
choir, chamber choir, junior choir, SSA choir,
Junior chamber choir and a singer/songwriter
club. A Rock School takes place on Saturday
morning. The College frequently performs
within the community, including regular concerts
in St Peters Church as well as many concerts
within the College each term. There are also
performance opportunites outside the Petersfield
area including a Scholars lunchtime concert in

Portsmouth Cathedral and a Summer Concert
which was held in St John s Smith Square , London.
In recent years the College has staged two
spectacular outside concerts which have featured
fireworks, the Royal Marines, Opera Gala, Carmina
Burana and the 1812 Overture. The College
Orchestra have recently toured Lake Garda, Italy
and Rhineland, Germany. The Junior Choir toured
Paris, singing in Notre Dame and Disneyland and
more recently, Belgium. The SSA Choir toured
Bath in October 2016.
In February, the College staged Miss Saigon,
Schools Edition.
