CALCULATION:
Titration 1:

pH at equivalent point is 8.57

pH at half-equivalent point = pKa

8.57
= 2

= 4.29

Calculate the acid ionization constant,Ka :

pKa = -logKa

4.29 = -logKa

Ka = arc log -4.29

= 5.12910-5

Titration 2:

pH at equivalent point is 8.68

pH at half-equivalent point = pKa

8.68
= 2

= 3.93

Calculate the acid ionization constant,Ka :

pKa = -logKa

3.93 = -logKa

Ka = arc log -3.93

= 1.17510-4

Average the acid ionization constant Ka:

( 5.129 105 ) +(1.175 104 )

2 = 8.439510-5
Molarity of unknown weak acid from titration 1:

M1V1=M2V2

(0.1M)(10.5mL)=(M2)(10mL)

M2=0.105 M

Molarity of unknown weak acid from titration 2:

M1V1=M2V2

(0.1M)(9.5mL)=(M2)(10mL)

M2=0.095 M

Average molarity of unknown weak acid:

( 0.105 M ) +( 0.095 M )
2 = 0.1M

ERROR CALCULATION

The unknown monoprotic acid is identified to be ascorbic acid The pKa value for
ascorbic acid is 4.10 and its Ka value is 7.910-5 ,theoretically. Thus, the percentage errors for
each theoretical value to the calculated value are;

Percentage error (pKa) = |4.104.11

4.10 |
100=0.24

Percentage error (Ka) = |(7.9 105 )(8.4395 105 )

(7.9 105) | 100=6.83
