Objectives- What are you

teaching? Students will be able to:

Read the text while picking up on important main events and details.
Discuss the chapter within a group setting.
Show comprehension by forming complete sentences while answering inquiring

questions about the chapter.

Provide supported analysis of the chapter.
Comprehend information obtain while reading the story aloud.

Rationale

I am teaching these objectives because they align directly with the English and language

arts standards for this grade level. They will be able to analyze the chapter and the

characters actions, which is an integral part of their learning in second grade. This lesson

fits into the unit of novel studies. They have been answering comprehension questions

after they read the chapter. This allows them to reflect and connect big events

throughout the book. This lesson will incorporate cooperative and collaborative learning. I

have noticed that my students struggle with coming up with answers, so I designed this

lesson so they can brainstorm ideas within their groups.

collected at the end of the lesson for further evaluation.

Teacher

The class will read Chapter 11 of Frindle by Andrew Clements. This

will be read in a circle read, where the teacher picks students to

read a paragraph then switch to another student.

The teacher will lead the reading, while asking clarifying questions

that encourage students to reflect on what they are reading.

These questions will include: who, why, how, can you relate, etc.

Once they have completed the chapter, the teacher will give an

explanation of what they will do for their comprehension activity.

Todays comprehension for this chatper will be a collaborative

activity. Each table will be given a dice. Each side of the dice will

contain a question that will assess your comprehension of that

chapter. As a group, you will read the question and then discuss the

answer. Once your group has discussed the question, you will work

as a group to create the best answer. Once you have answered all

questions we will go over the answers as a class.

Dismiss the class into their table groups.

Disperse the materials: dice and answer sheet.

Have groups determine who will be the recorder for the group.

Give students 30 minutes to answer the questions.

Walk around the room as they work together to make observations.

Come back together as a group, have each group provide an answer

for one question and create class discussion.

Have each group turn in their group questions.

What will you do if a student struggles with the content?

They will be given extra support from the teacher and their peers. Since this is

a group activity, the teacher will look for students who are struggling with

providing answers in the group setting. Those that are really struggling will be

put into a small group where the teacher will help conduct the group

discussion.

needs as people and as backgrounds of your students?

the story, and asks them to explain how they would react in this storyline.

How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional

language support?

The questions will be read to the ELL students in the classroom. The teacher
