1. My teaching subject area and anticipated grade level: Physics, 11th and 12th grade.
a. How are students to signal that they want your attention and help? Students will
quietly raise one hand to signal that they want attention or help. If the situation involves
the safety of a student during a lab activity or other type of group activity where I am
circling the room, a student should approach me. This is the only time students are
allowed to leave their work location to approach me so that I know it is urgent when they
do so.
b. How do you call on students during question and discussion sessions? During
question and discussion sessions, I will always call on students by their name. It will help
me to learn names and to keep other students from getting confused about who I called
on. When students are addressing one another during a class discussion, students are
c. How and when are students to enter and exit the classroom? Students are allowed to
enter the classroom as soon as the opening bell for a class change rings. When students
enter, they should immediately start following the directions that are already on the
board. If the activities do not require movement around the room, they should be
completed in the students assigned groups. Students will be allowed to talk to one
another quietly from their seats. Class lab materials are picked up 15 minutes before the
end of class. Students then complete the closing for the day. Students are allowed to pack
up their personal materials when the opening bell for the next class change rings. They
d. How are students to obtain the materials for instruction? Materials for labs will
already be at the lab stations. For worksheets that should be started immediately, I will
hand them out at the door. . For other worksheets, I will select a student volunteer to pass
them out.. Each student will have their own folder in which I place all graded work. I will
e. How are students to store their personal items? Students should store all personal
f. What are the procedures for students going to the drinking fountain or bathroom?
Students cannot leave the room for 20 minutes at the beginning of class and 20 minutes at
the end of class. Students may raise their hand and ask to leave at any other time. I will
then dismiss them one at a time. I will write students a pass on a post it note. Students
will be asked to wait to leave, if at all possible, if I am speaking to the whole class in a
g. What are the procedures during class interruptions? For hall passes, the interaction
should be silent. This will minimize the distraction to other students. Any external
interruptions that are not urgent will not be addressed until a stopping point in the lesson.
For urgent interruptions, students will be instructed to continue on with their activities or
h. What are the procedures for tardies or early dismissal? Early dismissal should be
discussed with me before the class starts. I will approve or disapprove of it before class.
For tardies, students should sign the tardy log and being working. There is an opening
every day that is due 10 minutes after the start of class. I give students a grade for the best
i. What are the procedures for turning in homework? There will be a homework bin for
each of my classes at the front of the classroom. When the students enter, if the
instructions on the board say to turn in an assignment, then the students will place their
homework in the bin. There will be no homework assignments accepted after the closing
bell for the class change rings. Late homework can only be turned in at the beginning of
class, before the closing bell rings. Late homework should be placed in the homework
bin, with a note attached explaining why the homework was late. If a student is absent,
the homework is due within 2 days of returning to class. It should be turned into the bin,
before the closing bell rings, with a note attached saying it is make up work.
j. What are the safety procedures for laboratory activities? What strategies will be
used to remind students of the procedures? There will be many safety procedures for
lab activities. I will use an incidence form, provided by the school or district, to record
any accidents. The procedures for students will be displayed on a poster. This poster will
stay on the wall, in the same spot, all year long. Before every lab, I will let students know
how to apply the procedures to this lab specifically. The following is the list of the
procedures:
2. Raise your hand if you have question. Approach me immediately for any safety
concerns.
3. Leave all food, drinks, cell phones and electronics in your bookbag, underneath your
desk.
4. Wear lab coats, goggles and closed toe shoes for all lab activities.
5. Follow all directions for the lab. Use all the equipment in the manner it is intended.
Students can approach me in the doorway during the class change before and after the
class. If the discussion requires more time, I will schedule a time to meet. I ask students
to write me a note for any action items we discuss, like changing a grade. Everyone who
enters the classroom is expected to be respectful. I will call on students by name during
class discussion in order to encourage students to refrain from talking over one another.
During group work, students are expected to give the same curtesy of not talking over
one another. All speaking will be kept at an inside level. Since a limited number of
people are allowed to speak at once, the room should stay relatively quiet. In a quieter
l. What are the procedures for making transitions during the lesson? Many transitions
in the physics classroom involve moving from desks to lab stations. To ease the
transition, I will already have the equipment for the lab set out at the lab stations. This
will minimize motion around the room. I will cue transitions by having a timer on the
Promethean Board.
m. How will the teacher deal with inappropriate behavior or procedure infractions?
Infractions will be dealt with as seamlessly as possible. I will give a brief reminder and
warning at the first and second offenses. The reminder will often be a redirection. For
example, if a student was tapping their pencil, I would ask for everyone to take notes,
instead of asking for the student to stop using their pencil as a drumstick. At the third
offense, I will ask the student to speak with me after class. At the fourth offense, or in a
serious situation, I will ask the student to speak with me in the hall immediately. If I go
into the hall, the students will be instructed to continue on with the activity they were
previously learning. If I am giving direct instruction at the time, I will ask the students to
write a 5 sentence summary of what the lecture has been about so far and/or their
predictions. This will be done to keep students busy and engaged. I want them to stay
focused on the lecture and not the student. I will be quick and calm about these
instructions. When conversing with the student, I will talk to the student about why they
behaved in that way, why I dont allow that behavior in the classroom and the
consequence. Consequences will be logical and make sense in the context of the
infraction.
n. How will the teacher reward positive behavior? Students who follow procedures
exceptionally well will be given verbal praise. Students who demonstrate positive
behavior will be allowed to take on jobs within the classroom. These jobs include being
able to help set up labs in the morning, make up work coordinator, emergency
coordinator and paper collector. The emergency coordinator will lead the line for fire
drills, and be in charge of calling administration if I am unable to. Jobs will rotate weekly
based on who has earned a job and who wants a job.
o. What responsibilities will the students have for maintaining the physical
environment? The students will have some responsibility for the classroom environment,
in order to help them to take ownership for their education. One job in the classroom will
be to come in before school and help set up the lab. Every student will be responsible for
cleaning up their lab station and desk before leaving the class. Every student will also be
responsible for putting work in the appropriate bins, in order to keep the classroom
organized.
behavior will be redirected by reminding students of the activity at hand. For example, I
may ask a student to demonstrate the skill we are talking about, write the answer to a
question on the board or answer a question aloud. These will not be seen by the class as
punishment, but rather as a part of our regular learning environment. I will also use
proximity control. This means that I will stand by students who are struggling to stay on
task. In general, I will walk around the room to help the whole class to be engaged.
q. What are procedures for making up work when absent form class? All work will be
kept up with on a Google Calender. Students will have access to the calendar online.
Students will ask for the specific items they need during tutorial after school.
3. List of student behavior expectations that I will present to my class (no more than five):
Rule 1: Follow lab safety procedures and school rules at all times.
4. Explanation of consequences for broken rules: The consequences for broken rules will be
logical and related the rules. Reminders and warnings will be given for all rules, unless the
severity of the infraction requires immediate action to keep the other students safe. After the
reminder and warning, the following consequences will be used. If a student breaks a lab
safety procedure, they will be removed from the lab and asked to work at their desks. If a
student breaks a school rule, they will be removed from the classroom. For Rule 2, the
student will be moved to a different place in the classroom so that they are more isolated. For
Rule 3, the student will be asked to apologize to whomever he/she was disrespectful to. For
Rule 4, I will contact the students parents about the tardiness and/or lack of completed work/
supplies. In collaboration with the students parents, we will make a plan to help the student
to succeed. For Rule 5, the student will be asked to repeat the activity, this time following the
directions.
5. How procedures, rules, or consequences may vary (if at all) according to the grade level
taught or according to any other criteria, such as in team teaching: Physics is commonly
taught to 11th graders. In team teaching, both I and my coteacher will follow the same
procedures. When one of us exits the classroom, the other will keep the lesson moving. This
will be for both interruptions and behavioral talks in the hallway. When there is a question of
what to do in a situation we will discuss the situation outside of the class. We will always be
on the same page and act as a unified team. If I am teaching physical science (8th or 9th
graders), the procedures and rules will be similar. I want my 9th graders to take responsibility
like my 11th graders. I would change the following procedures. I would not allow talking
during the class change, as I do with the 11th grader, as students start the work listed on the
board. All transitions be cued but also be silent. Students will also store their bookbags in the
back of the room, instead of at their desks. All of these procedures will help to minimize the
number of distractions in the room. Safety procedures will remain the same, except that
