Quotient rule from

product & chain rules In my studybook from college I've found this problem:
dierentiate ""ln((1+e^x)/(1+e^(-x)))""
Practice: Dierentiate and I don't seem to be able to crack it, how kan I solve this
quotients one?

Quotient rule example

Practice: Quotient rule You can solve this using the chain rule, combined with
the quotient rule, but it becomes very ugly, very quickly!
But there is a more elegant way of solving it, as follows:
Equation of tangent line

ln((1+e^x)/(1+e^(-x)))
Equation of normal line
Break the logarithm up:
=ln(1+e^x) - ln(1+e^-x)
Quotient rule review

Dierentiate now, using the chain rule (watch out for

Next tutorial the negatives on the second fraction):
Review: Product, quotien =e^x/(1+e^x) - (-e^-x/(1+e^-x))

Now here's where the magic happens.. multiply the

second fraction by e^x:
=e^x/(1+e^x) - (-e^-x/(1+e^-x))(e^x/e^x)
=e^x/(1+e^x) - (-1/(e^x + 1))

They now have a common denominator, so you can

add them:
=(e^x - (-1)/(1+e^x))
= (e^x + 1)/(1+e^x))

Turns out, the numerator and denominator are the

same. Therefore, the derivative is 1. Yes... after all this
hard work, the answer is, indeed, 1.
