READINESS
I. Goals/Objectives/Standard(s)
A. Goal(s)Students will understand a community and how it functions.
C. Standard(s):
NCSS: Individuals, Groups, and Institutions Strand 5
III. Anticipatory Set: Today I have brought with me 3 different kinds of candy.
I have M&Ms, Skittles, and Swedish Fish. Raise your hand if you would
rather have the M&Ms! Raise your hand if you would rather have the
Skittles! Raise your hand if you would rather have the Swedish Fish. Just
like all of you chose different kinds of candy to eat, people choose
different kinds of jobs to have. Last week we learned about community
helpers which taught us some different jobs people can have. Today we
are going to discover even more jobs and learn why people choose
different jobs in a community, just like you all chose a different candy to
eat.
IV. Purpose: Today we are going to learn about why people choose different
jobs in a community because it is important to know how a community
works together, and how you can dream to have a job that you will love.
- Before sending the students to their stations I will model the correct way to
participate in each activity.
Centers:
The students will have their name on a card on the front board which will show them
their groups.
There will be a timer on the board so they can know when to switch groups.

Did you have fun at the stations? Based on what you discovered and learned at each station, I
want each of you to make a decision on what you want to be when you grow up! When I call your
name stand where you are and say, When I grow up I want to be a ______, because _________.
Then you can sit down and I will call on the next student to share. After each student shares say,
Did you notice how people wanted to have different jobs? That is because everyone likes to do
different things and has unique talents. If everyone wanted to have the same job, our community
would not be successful. We need each other.
CONCLUSION: I will pick a few name sticks and ask them what their favorite part of the
lesson was. I will end with a short summary of the lesson.
Did you notice how people liked different things and wanted to have different jobs? That is
because everyone enjoys different activities and has unique talents. If everyone wanted to have the
same job, our community would not be successful. We need each other to survive.
A. Formative: During the stations I will be floating around and observing the students. I will use
their responses to decide how I will proceed throughout the lesson.
B. Summative: I will use the students presentation about what they want to be when they grow up
to assess their understanding that people get different jobs because they have different interests
and talents.
