Movie Review
Soekarno

A lot of conspiracy and rumors about our founding father, Soekarno, had spread
among the citizens for decades. Despite that, I believe that this movie reflects the true
image and characteristics of Soekarno.

The very first scene of the movie showed an event of where Soekarno was still
referred as Kusno, but then later changed his name. He always believed in the
teachings of Islam and Marxism, for the two stand up for the lower class people.
Soekarno grew up to be smart and strong, and was involved in many political
activities that occurred back then. Since he played a huge role in Indonesias politics,
he was once considered a traitor and was sentenced to four years of prison, but was
freed two years later. Soekarno and Inggit, his wife, along with their children was also
exiled to Ende on 1934.

During Dutchs regime, Japan came to Indonesia, bringing along their propaganda
called the 3A. The Nippon preached that they were the Light of Asia and that they
will conquer the continent on behalf of Japan. Soekarno was approached and was
promised that Indonesia will receive independency from Japan, only if Indonesia
reacts cooperatively towards Japans colonialism. It was a big leap for Soekarno to
actually obey Japan, following their propaganda; meanwhile the people of Indonesia
suffered. A lot of things occurred during that time. A slavery system called kerja rodi
was held in order to fulfill Japans needs. The citizens were tortured and many died in
sorrow. Jugun Ianfu, a system where the women were forced to please the Japanese
soldiers flared across the nation. These kinds of things sadden me because not only
that we were colonialized, the Japanese troops exploit us in ways we could never
imagine.

Throughout the process of making Indonesia an independence country, Soekarno fell

in love with Fatmawati. His marriage with Inggit did not last long after that. Soekarno
later married Fatmawati and was gifted a first son. Their journey lasted until
Indonesia finally reached independency.

This movie interests me in many ways; it was also informative and exciting. This
movie inspires me and grew out my respect for the founding fathers of Indonesia.
Without the role of Soekarno, I believe Indonesia would never be the country that
stands strong today. Despite the many colonials that colonialized our country, there
are a lot of positive aspects that was gained such as a better infrastructure and broader
knowledge. The love story that was shared throughout the movie made the viewers
enthusiast, too. I highly recommend this movie and I would definitely see it again.
