Day 1, Lesson 5-1: Fraction Decomposition
Standards: 4.NF.3, 4.NF.3.b
Objective: Students explore decomposing fractions into sums of fractions with the same
denominator.
Before the lesson: For Part 2, gather extra red fraction circles (whole) or have students cut out
the fraction circles for Math Message, page TA40. Consider partnering students to share
resources.
Vocabulary: unit fraction, decomposing, mixed number
1. Warm Up (5 min):
a. Mental Math and Fluency-students write equivalent fractions
2. Focus (30-40 min):
a. Math Message: Students use fraction circles to decompose a fraction into sum of
unit fractions
b. Decomposing Fractions and Mixed Numbers: Students use fraction circles to
decompose fractions and mixed numbers into sums of fractions with the same
denominators
c. Practicing Decomposing Fractions: students write equations and shade fraction
circles to show fractions as the sum of fractions with the same denominators

i. Game: students play a variation of Multiplication Top-It to practice
multiplying 2-digit and 3-digit numbers by 1-digit numbers

Day 2, Lesson 5-2: The Whole for Fractions


Standards: 4.NF.3, 4.NF.3.a , 4.NF.3.b
Objective: Students practice finding the when given a fractional part of a region.
Before the lesson: For Part 2, consider making copies of Math Masters, page TA40, if you
havent already, to be sure students have enough extra fraction circles. Alternatively, have
students work in partnerships.
Vocabulary: whole

a. Mental Math and Fluency- students find equivalent fractions
2. Focus (30-40 min):
a. Math Message: given a fractional part of a region, students find the whole

Day 3, Lesson 5-3: Adding Fractions


Standards: 4.NF.3, 4.NF.3.a, 4.NF.3.b, 4.NF.3.d
Objective: Students add fractions (of the same whole, with like denominators) to solve number
stories.
Before the lesson: For Part 2, consider having students create a Number-Line Poster. To do so,
they should tape together Math Journal 2, Activity Sheets AS15-AS17. The poster will be used
throughout Unit 5 and in later units. For the optional Extra Practice activity, use Math Masters,
page TA20 to create Whats My Rule? problems involving addition of fractions.

Objective: Students learn multiple strategies to add mixed numbers with like denominators.
Before the lesson: For Part 2, consider having students work in partnerships o they have access
to multiple sets of fractions circles

2. Focus (40-50 min):
a. Math Message: students write a mixed number as an equivalent fraction and
explain their solution
b. Adding Mixed Numbers with Like Denominators: students share strategies for
changing mixed numbers into fractions greater than 1 and learn to add mixed
numbers with like denominators
c. Solving Mixed-Number Addition Problems: students solve number stories with
mixed numbers

Objective: Students add unlike fractions with tenths and hundredths.

b. Adding Tenths and Hundredths: students discuss different methods for adding
tenths and hundredths

write equation to solve addition problems with unlike denominators

number stories

Day 6, Lesson 5-6, Part 1: Queen Arlenes Dilemma (Open Response and Reengagement)
Standards: 4.OA.1, SMP, GMP 1.3, SMP2, GMP 2.1, GMP 2.2
Objective: Students decide how to divide an area of land into parts based on a number story and
write a fraction addition equation to represent the partitioning.
Before the lesson: Solve the open response, problem and consider how students might interpret
the problem. If possible, schedule time to review a students work and plan for Day 2 of this
lesson with your grade-level team.
Vocabulary: fraction addition equations

a. Mental Math and Fluency: students record multiplicative comparison equations
2. Focus (55-65 min):
a. Math Message: students find combinations of fraction circles that make up 1
whole and write fraction addition equations

Objective: Students discuss some solutions and representations and revise their work.
Before the lesson: Have extra copies of Math Masters, page 203 for students to revise their work.
1. Focus (50-55 min):
a. Setting Expectations: students review the open response problem and discuss how
representations are used to make sense of the problem. They also review how to
respectfully discuss others work
b. Reengaging in the Problem: students make sense of others representations and
make connections among them
c. Revising Work: students revise their solutions and representations

solving number stories.
Before the lesson: To meet the needs of individual students for the optional Extra Practice
activity, consider using Math Masters, page TA43 to create Frame-and-Arrows diagrams
involving subtraction of mixed numbers.

Objective: Students record data on a line plot and answer questions regarding the data.
Before the lesson: For the optional Enrichment and Extra Practice activities, obtain a spring scale
that can be used to weigh full backpacks. Together with the class, weigh full backpacks to the
nearest pound. Record data and make copies for student use.
1. Warm-Up (5 min): students distinguish fraction sums more or less than 1 whole

Objective: Students explore rotation, iteration of measurement units, and angle measures.
Before the lesson: Consider displaying the relevant vocabulary chart from Unit1. Gather
geometry kits and fraction circles. The clocks students make in the optional Enrichment activity
will be used again in Lesson 5-11.

Objective: Students are introduced to the degree as a unit to measure angles.
Before the lesson: For Part 2, make an extra copy of Math Masters, page TA47 and cut out a 1
angle from the 360 circle. For the optional Readiness activity, obtain a copy of the book How
Big is a Foot? By Rolk Myller. For the optional Extra Practice acitivity, obtain two different-
color paper plates and mark their center points. Cut apart the angle measure cards on Math
Masters, page TA48.

a. Mental Math and Fluency: students convert measurement units
2. Focus (30-40 min):
a. Math Message: students consider the need for a standard unit of measure
b. Introducing the Degree: students examine an angle measuring 1 and mark
