Chapter  Two-­‐  God  the  Righteous  Creator  

Don’t  make  assumptions  about  what  people  know  about  God.  Start  with  God  
himself.  

What  does  it  mean  that  God  is  the  good  news  behind  the  bad  news  of  the  Good  
News?

Chapter  3  Man  the  Sinner  

What  is  sin?  
 
Adam  and  Eve  traded  their  favor  with  God  for  the  pursuit  of  their  own  pleasure  and  
their  own  glory.  
Who  are  sinners?  

Are  we  basically  good?  

 
What  is  humanities  fundamental  problem?  

 
What  is  the  danger  of  presenting  the  gospel  or  salvation  as  something  about  helping  
us  with  the  feelings  of  meaningless  and  purposelessness?  
 
 

We  are  criminals  deserving  judgment,  not  victims  deserving  help.    What  do  you  
think  about  that?  
 

If  we  reduce  sin  to  a  mere  breaking  of  relationship,  rather  than  understanding  it  as  
the  traitorous  rebellion  of  a  beloved  subject  against  his  good  and  righteous  King,  we  
will  never  understand  why  the  death  of  God’s  Son  was  required  to  address  it.  Why  
do  you  think  this  is?  
 
The  Bible  teaches  that  a  big  part  of  our  problem  is  that  we  think  too  highly  of  
ourselves,  not  too  lowly.  Do  you  find  that  you  ever  confuse  sin  with  negative  
thinking,  thinking  that  you  just  need  to  think  bigger  about  yourself  and  abilities,  
with  some  help  from  God?

Chapter  Four-­‐  Jesus  Christ  the  Savior  

 
But!  What  a  great  word  after  the  last  chapter.  
When  it  was  all  over,  the  guilt  Adam  had  inflicted  on  his  entire  race  would  be  
defeated,  the  death  God  pronounced  over  his  own  creation  would  die,  and  hell  
would  be  brought  to  it’s  knees.    
The  bible  is  the  story  of  God’s  counteroffensive  against  sin.  It  is  the  grand  narrative  
of  how  God  made  it  right,  how  he  is  making  it  right,  and  how  he  will  one  day  make  it  
right  finally  and  forever.  
 

Fully  God,  Fully  Man  

Jesus  is  completely  human  and  completely  God.  Why  is  this  important  to  
understand?  
“My  kingdom  is  not  of  this  world”  John  18:36.  
King  Jesus  came  not  only  to  inaugurate  the  kingdom  of  God,  but  also  to  bring  sinners  
into  it  by  dying  in  their  place  and  for  their  sin,  taking  their  punishment  on  himself  
and  securing  forgiveness  for  them,  making  them  righteous  in  God’s  sight,  and  
qualifying  them  to  share  in  the  inheritance  of  the  kingdom.  (Colossians  1:12)  What  
does  this  mean  to  you?  How  has  this  changed  your  life?  
 
How  does  this  effect  how  you  preach  the  gospel  to  yourself  and  others?  

 
 
How  was  Jesus  a  suffering  King  and  what  did  he  do  on  the  cross?

Chapter  Five-­‐  Response-­‐Faith  and  Repentance  

What  is  the  jumping  into  the  pool  illustration  about?  
Repent  and  believe.  Mark  1:15  
This  is  what  God  requires  of  us  in  response  to  the  good  news  of  Jesus.  

 
What  marks  out  those  who  are  Christ’s  people,  or  “Christians”?    
 

What  is  faith?  

 
 
What  exactly  are  we  relying  on  Jesus  for?  

 
Faith  Alone.  What  does  this  mean?  
 

Repentance,  the  Flip  Side  of  the  Coin  

What  is  repentance?  
Do  you  hate  sin  and  war  against  it,  or  do  you  cherish  it  and  defend  it?  
 

Fruit.  To  rely  on  your  own  Christian  fruit  to  secure  God’s  favor  is  ultimately  to  shift  
your  faith  from  Jesus  to  yourself.    And  that  is  no  salvation  at  all.

Chapter  Six-­‐  The  Kingdom  

What  are  some  of  the  “rewards”  of  being  a  Christian?  
 
 

The  Christian  life  is  not  just  about  making  sure  you  avoid  God’s  wrath.  Far  from  it!  
It’s  about  being  in  a  right  relationship  with  God,  and  ultimately  enjoying  him  
forever.  That  is  to  say,  it’s  about  gaining  what  we  cannot  lose-­‐becoming  a  citizen  of  
his  eternal  kingdom.  

 
What  is  the  Kingdom  of  God?  
 

What  is  the  present  role  of  the  Holy  Spirit  in  the  Kingdom  of  God?  
 
How  is  the  Kingdom  of  God  not  yet  complete?  

 
At  the  end  of  the  day,  the  only  way  into  the  kingdom  is  through  the  blood  of  the  
King.  

 
We  are  to  live  a  life  worthy  of  the  kingdom  to  which  he  has  called  us,  to  shine  like  
stars  in  a  crooked  and  depraved  generation.  1  Thessalonians  2:12,  Philippians  2:15  
It’s  not  at  all  that  living  the  life  of  the  kingdom  brings  us  into  the  kingdom,  It’s  that  
once  we  have  been  brought  into  the  kingdom  through  faith  in  the  King,  we  find  
ourselves  with  a  new  master,  a  new  law,  a  new  charter,  a  new  life-­‐  and  therefore  we  
begin  to  want  to  live  the  life  of  the  kingdom.  
 

Where,  in  this  age,  is  the  life  of  the  kingdom  worked  out  primarily?  
 
How  do  we  press  on  through  darkness?

Chapter  Seven-­‐  Keeping  the  Cross  at  the  Center  

Three  Substitute  Gospels  
Only  proclaiming  that  Jesus  is  Lord.  What  does  this  mean?  
 

 
Creation-­‐fall-­‐redemption-­‐consummation…  
If  we  say  merely  that  God  is  redeeming  a  people  and  remaking  the  world,  but  do  not  
say  how  he  is  doing  so  and  how  a  person  can  be  included  in  that  redemption,  then  
we  have  not  proclaimed  the  good  news.  
 
Cultural  transformation  is  not  the  gospel.  How  can  this  view  leave  out  the  gospel?  
 

Christians  can  always  get  the  world  to  think  they  are  cool-­‐  right  up  to  the  moment  
they  start  talking  about  being  saved  by  a  crucified  man.  And  that’s  where  coolness  
evaporates,  no  matter  how  carefully  you’ve  cultivated  it.  
What  must  remain  at  the  center  of  the  gospel?

Chapter  Eight-­‐  The  Power  of  the  Gospel  

 
How  is  it  that  we  let  the  beauty  and  power  and  vastness  of  the  gospel  be  crowded  
out  of  our  minds  so  often  and  for  so  long?  
 
Why  is  it  that  our  thoughts  and  emotions  are  often  dominated  by  silly  things  like  
whether  my  car  is  clean,  or  what’s  happening  on  CNN  right  now,  or  whether  I  was  
happy  with  my  lunch  today,  rather  than  by  these  glorious  truths?  

 
Why  do  we  so  often  organize  and  think  about  our  lives  as  if  we  were  wearing  
blinders,  rather  than  in  the  light  of  eternity?  
 
Why  does  this  gospel  not  permeate,  all  the  time  and  all  the  way  to  the  bottom,  all  
our  relationships?  
 

We  must  fight  sin  and  unbelief  and  embrace  the  gospel!  

 
 

Repent  and  Believe  

 
Rest  and  Rejoice  
 

The  gospel  tells  me  that  my  righteous  standing  before  God  is  not  grounded  in  
checking  off  some  spiritual  bingo  card.  Enough  fruit?  Check.  Quiet  time?  Check!  
Spiritual  conversation?  Check,  check,  check!  Great!  I’m  really  feeling  saved  today!  
 
What  is  God’s  verdict  over  you?  

Where  is  this  grounded?  

Love  Christ’s  people  
Forgiveness    

Speak  the  Gospel  to  the  World  

 
Luke  24:46-­‐48!  
 

There  will  never  be  another  gospel,  and  there  is  no  other  way  for  people  to  be  saved  
from  their  sins.  What  are  we  to  do  with  this?  

If  we  understand  the  gospel  correctly,  what  will  we  long  for?
