Content Standards Addressed: S2E2. Students will investigate the position of sun and moon to show
patterns throughout the year.
d. Use observations and charts to record the shape of the moon for a period of time.

Brief Description of Learning Experience:

For my particular project/lesson my students will be using a blog to upload a podcast to. The blog I
have created is a class blog that the students or their parents can look at whenever they need to. For this
lesson though, they will be creating their own podcast based on specific information about the phases of the
moon and then uploading them to the blog. This covers a standard and also gets technology involved into
the lesson!
During the unit that covers each point of the standard, the students will be given a chart and told that
they must take the chart home and for every nights homework they are in charge or recording the way the
moon looks. This activity will take four weeks. Many homework grades and one final grade will be given
for this assignment. The students as well as myself and their parents will be able to enjoy the final product
of this project, a podcast on our class blog, that each student produces on their own.

Student Engagement/Level of Technology Implementation (LoTi): This project is a LoTi level 5

because the students are creating an original product online using information that they recorded over a
period of time. The students are also making real world connections by actually making a product from the
way the moon is in real life each night. The students are also communicating with the teacher and their
peers about what they came up with each night as they are recording their data. Their original product is
shared with the class.

Importance of technology: Without using the class blog, this prject could still be done, but it would not be
the same and it would be a lot more difficult for the students to listen to each others podcasts. If the
students uploaded them to the class blog, they will be able to easily access each others podcasts and be
able to listen to them whenever they would like and compare their results with their peers. I believe that
using the blog is a wonderful way to finish this project. It also gives students time to use and become
familiar with different forms of the internet world.
Inspiration (optional): I came up with this lesson on my own after seeing a chart on google that was to be
used to record the shape of the moon each night.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: The issues that could arise in this activity are minimal since I
provide the students with creditable music to use in their podcast and the rest of the data used in this project
is for them to come up with on their own. The students will not be posting their name or pictures to the site.
They will simply post their podcast on our class blog with their initials (first and last) at the end of it.

Describe your personal learning goal for this activity. This project is to be used to give students
independence to work at their own pace in the comfort of their own home. I hope that by doing this
students will see how the moon changes each night due to the rotation of the Earth. I also would like for
them to take away that a lot of things that they are taught in school really is about their real life and not just
something out of a textbook. I want them to see that the information they are being taught has a point for
them in life.

Other comments about your proposed activity: I love the idea of a classroom blog and will definitely be
using one in my classroom. It is a wonderful way to display wonderful things that my students are doing,
keep parents informed, and just be a fun way to connect with students and their parents.
