Unit 3 Paper

Being vulnerable around people is usually hard to do because it can been seen as a

sign of weakness but really its something else; its a way of showing a person trusts others.

When being vulnerable your letting people know your story and helping them to

understand that. In many cases this is what artists do; they pour out their thoughts or

feelings into their artwork which they either decide to share to the world or to a selective

amount of people. In A Whole New Mind (2006) by Daniel H. Pink he talks about the

story and meaning and the different ways they are used. Pink says that story is an essence

of persuasion, communication, and self understanding and that meaning is finding

purpose, transcendence, and spiritual fulfillment. For a person to tell their story they have

to open up and not be afraid of their emotions when doing so because story is context

enriched by emotion and that in general stories almost always pack an emotional punch

(Pink, 2006, p. 103). Then with how meaning fits into this it main drive is for the pursuit

of happiness and the its not a fear-fueled pursuit but that it is the purpose is the

journey itself which would at some point be reflected/part of a story. With this I would

want to come up with different ways on how to apply story and meaning in the classroom

and show the children that vulnerability isnt bad.

One way I would apply this to the classroom is through VTS. I would carefully

choose artwork that appear to have some sort of deeper meaning to it or tells a story that
can show to the class. I would like to hear the students thoughts and opinions of the

pictures and encourage them to all give their ideas about what the artwork is about. In

doing this they would be more open in to sharing their thoughts, opinions, and ideas

which i is one way they are being vulnerable. Another way I would try my students to be

vulnerable is to have them draw/paint, etc and self portrait that reflects who they are as a

person. This would get them to open up about themselves through their artwork: this has

them give their story and any who look upon it would probably look for the meaning

within the piece. Being vulnerable may be a hard thing to do but in doing so it relieves

the person, so doing this in classroom setting it may help relieve the students in whatever

is going on in their lives.
