COURSE 3: FULL ADVANCED DRIVING COURSE (MODULES I, II & III)

The course comprises of the below mentioned three modules, i.e. Modles I, II, and III. The
Course outcomes is geared toward giving a driver the necessary mental and physical skills to be
able to pro-actively and positively deal with everyday situations in spite of adverse road
conditions, or the incorrect actions of other road users.

Description of Training Modules

MODULE I

a) Accident Prevention: The Think and Do of driving; The SIPDE Process: Dynamic skills
required to deal with road hazards
Motor Law: What constitutes negligent driving; Causation; Factors Contributing to the
occurrence of Motor Vehicle Accidents

b) Defensive Driving: Defensive Driving is a tried and tested method specifically designed to
prevent road accidents and collisions. It ensures that nothing is left to chance and nothing
is overlooked, and the training is focussed on developing the drivers strategy in
recognising-, dealing with- and re-acting to road hazards and the mistakes of other road
users. Trainees are taught how to minimise their own mistakes, and how to create a safety
cushion around their vehicles when driving in traffic, i.e. to have enough time and space to
think and react correctly to hazards which may pose a threat to their safety.

c) Vehicle Control/Collision Avoidance/Skid-pan practical: Few drivers have the

opportunity to learn how to apply the techniques of accident prevention, collision
avoidance, as well as loss of control prevention, under controlled conditions. The only way
to achieve this is through a Skid-pan training session, where trainees can acquire essential
practical driving skills and are taught how to deal with emergency situations, how to remain
in control of their vehicles at all times, especially when driving on wet roads, and how to
prevent and avoid a collision.

Delegates are issued with a Certificate of Attendance.

Duration: Full Day (07:45 16:00)

MODULE II

a) Defensive Driving Practical

Road-Craft deals with the practical application of the rules and techniques of Defensive
Driving. Trainees receive individual instruction, on the public road, and are provided with a
detailed analysis of their current level of proficiency. This will assist the trainee in preparing
for the Final Test, which is attended 4 weeks after completion of this module.

Duration: 1 Hour pre-arranged practical training session within 5 days following

attendance of Module I

b) Final Test
During the Final Test, the candidates performance is evaluated and measured against the
Killarney Advanced Driving course standard. If successful, a Killarney Certificate of
Proficiency will be issued, which will be valid for two years. This will mean that a two yearly
test will then be required to renew the Certificate of Proficiency, once it has expired.

Delegates are issued with a Certificate of Proficiency.

Duration: 1 Hour pre-arranged practical test session, 4-6 weeks following

attendance of Module II, a

MODULE III

A hands-on training module, which is aimed at developing the drivers ability to apply advanced
techniques in dealing with varying (wet/dry) road conditions, at normal speed.
The focus is on improving the drivers knowledge and understanding of his vehicles abilities and
limitations; how to manage time and distance; the control of weight transfer whilst
braking/steering/accelerating; disciplines of cornering and smooth operation of the controls.
Emphasis is placed on developing the drivers ability to strategise and to re-act correctly in every
circumstance.
Delegates are issued with a Certificate of Attendance.
Duration: 3 Hours 2 of which are circuit time. Times vary according to season.

Please note: Delegates to attend the course in their own vehicle, as this is the vehicle in
which it will go wrong, when it goes wrong.
