A little-known gift from Mexico to the World: the Ajolote or Axolotl (Ambystoma
Caudata: Amphibia). Notes on the Critical Situation of its Population
Abstract. In 1863, thirty-four live specimens of a peculiar species of amphibian salamanders
called ajolotes or axolotl, arrived at the Natural Museum of History in Paris, France. They
were sent from Xochimilco in the Valley of Mexico. A series of papers on these animals were
published in Europe, and living specimens also were sent to many other countries. Currently,
more than three and a half thousand papers concerning the axolotl have been published in
different fields of Biology and Medicine. Unfortunately, just a few studies on these interesting
amphibians have been carried out in Mexico, and the Conservation Status of the axolotl is
deplorable. Several species face extinction and others are in critical condition, due to the loss
and deterioration of their habitat and other environmental problems. We briefly present here
the problems confronting the conservation of the species and we make suggestions to mitigate
their critical situation.
Key words: axolotl, Ambystoma, history, conservation, Mexico.
