MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL

"It can happen. It does happen.

But it can't happen if you quit." Lauren Dane.

We are what we repeatedly do.

Excellence then is not an act, but a habit. Aristotle

It gives me immense pleasure to pen a few words for our e-bulletin. At the onset I would like to thank the
last years editors and congratulate the newly selected editors for the current year.

Our first consideration is always in the best interest of the students. Our goal is to promote academic
excellence and continuous improvement.

I believe that excellence in education is aided by creating a learning environment in which all learners are
supported in maximizing their potential and talents. Education needs to focus on personalized learning
and instruction, while promoting an education system that is impartial, universally accessible, and meeting
the needs of all students.

It is of paramount importance that our learners have sufficient motivation and encouragement in order to
achieve their aims. We are all very proud of you, our students, and your accomplishments and look
forward to watching as you put your mark on the profession in the years ahead.

The call of the time is to progress, not merely to move ahead. Our progressive Management is looking
forward and wants our Institute to flourish as a Post Graduate Institute of Excellence. Steps are taken in
this direction and fruits of these efforts will be received by our students in the near future. Our Teachers
are committed and dedicated for the development of the institution by imparting their knowledge and play
the role of facilitator as well as role model to our students.

The Pharmacy profession is thriving with a multitude of possibilities, opportunities and positive
challenges. At Guru Nanak Institute of Pharmaceutical Science and Technology, our focus is on holistic
needs of our students.

I am confident that the students of GNIPST will recognize all the possibilities, take full advantage of the
opportunities and meet the challenges with purpose and determination.

Excellence in Education is not a final destination, it is a continuous walk. I welcome you to join us on
this path.

My best wishes to all.

HISTORICAL ARTICLE
Theodosius Dobzhansky
Widely regarded as the founder of evolutionary genetics,
Theodosius Dobzhansky was an eminent Ukrainian-American
geneticist and evolutionist. He played a vital role in the
development of evolutionary theory and genetics.
Early Life and Education:
Born in Nemirov, Russian Empire in 1900, Theodosius Dobzhansky
was the son of a high school mathematics teacher. He belonged to
a family of Russian Orthodox priests. During his childhood,
Dobzhansky had developed a passion of collecting insects, and was
an ardent fan of outdoor activities. In his high-school days, he
decided to become a biologist. After graduating in biology from the
University of Kiev in 1921, Dobzhansky accepted a position at the
Polytechnic Institute of Kiev on the faculty of agriculture.
Contributions and Achievements:
During his stay as a professor and researcher, Theodosius
Dobzhansky started devoting his efforts to the emerging field of
genetics. He studied many newer areas of genetics, starting
extensive research on the fruit-fly (Drosophila melanogaster).
Many contemporary geneticists followed his work, such as
Russian entomologist Yuri Filipchenko, who was Dobzhanskys
fellow professor at Leningrad University until 1927. He also later
analyzed the genetics of horses and cattle.
Dobzhansky followed zoologist Thomas Hunt Morgan to the
California Institute of Technology in 1928, working as assistant
professor in genetics. A few years later, in 1933, he made an
important breakthrough when Dobzhansky changed his model

organism to Drosophila pseudoobscura. The results corroborated

his worked Genetics and the Origin of Species. Published in 1937,
it turned out to be the most important book on evolutionary
biology of the 20th century. A combination of Darwinian selection
and modern genetics, it became a catalyst for future researches in
evolution.
Dobzhansky joined the Columbia University in 1940, making an
energetic group of genetics researchers around him. He moved to
Rockefeller University in 1962, where he remained until his
retirement in 1970. Dobzhansky revolutionized the application of
genetics and evolution to the understanding of human beings. He
also wrote about anthropological and philosophical themes, for
instance his influential 1962 work, Mankind Evolving, that
changed the face of modern genetics and evolutionary theory.
Later Life and Death:
Theodosius Dobzhansky retired from Rockefeller University in
1970, and announced to join the University of California at Davis as
a supervisor. He died five years later, in 1975, following a long
battle with leukemia. He was 75 years old.

Scientists watch a molecule protect itself from

radiation damage: (07th April, 2017)
When DNA is hit with ultraviolet light, it can lose excess energy
from radiation by ejecting the core of a hydrogen atom a single
proton to keep other chemical bonds in the system from
breaking. To gain insight into this process, researchers used X-ray
laser pulses from the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) at the
Department of Energys SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory to
investigate how energy from light transforms a relatively simple
molecule, 2-thiopyridone.
Homing system delivers drugs to specific
neurons: (06th April, 2017)
Biomedical engineers have developed a way to deliver drugs to
specific types of neurons in the brain, providing an unprecedented
ability to study neurological diseases while promising a more
targeted way to treat them.
Structure of tuberculosis drug target
determined: (06th April, 2017)
Scientists have determined the three-dimensional structure of the
target of the first-line anti-tuberculosis drug rifampin. They have
also discovered a new class of potential anti-tuberculosis drugs
that kill rifampin-resistant and multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis
bacteria. Tuberculosis (TB) bacteria infect a third of the world's
population and the disease kills 1.8 million people annually.

Schizophrenia signs in mice linked to

uncoordinated firing of brain cells: (05th April,
2017)
A small group of neurons fired haphazardly in mice with signs of
schizophrenia, report a team of scientists. The findings suggest
that a breakdown in the synchronized behavior of these brain cells
could produce the classic disordered thinking and perceptions
associated with the disease.
Multivitamins not associated with heart disease
risk, regardless of initial dietary intake: (05th
April, 2017)
Investigators have examined whether multivitamins might help
prevent CVD events among those in the PHS II with less nutritious
diets. Their results suggest that baseline nutritional status has no
clear impact on whether a daily multivitamin affects the risk of
CVD or overall mortality.

FDA allows marketing of first direct-to-consumer
tests that provide genetic risk information for
certain conditions
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today allowed marketing
of 23andMe Personal Genome Service Genetic Health Risk (GHR)
tests for 10 diseases or conditions. These are the first direct-to-
consumer (DTC) tests authorized by the FDA that provide
information on an individuals genetic predisposition to certain
medical diseases or conditions, which may help to make decisions
about lifestyle choices or to inform discussions with a health care
professional.

Consumers can now have direct access to certain genetic risk

information, said Jeffrey Shuren, M.D., director of the FDAs
Center for Devices and Radiological Health. But it is important
that people understand that genetic risk is just one piece of the
bigger puzzle, it does not mean they will or wont ultimately
develop a disease.
The GHR tests are intended to provide genetic risk information to
consumers, but the tests cannot determine a persons overall risk
of developing a disease or condition. In addition to the presence of
certain genetic variants, there are many factors that contribute to
the development of a health condition, including environmental
and lifestyle factors.
The 23andMe GHR tests work by isolating DNA from a saliva
sample, which is then tested for more than 500,000 genetic
variants. The presence or absence of some of these variants is
associated with an increased risk for developing any one of the
following 10 diseases or conditions:
Parkinsons disease, a nervous system disorder impacting
movement;
Late-onset Alzheimers disease, a progressive brain disorder
that destroys memory and thinking skills;
Celiac disease, a disorder resulting in the inability to digest
gluten;
Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, a disorder that raises the risk of
lung and liver disease;
Early-onset primary dystonia, a movement disorder involving
involuntary muscle contractions and other uncontrolled
movements;
Factor XI deficiency, a blood clotting disorder;
Gaucher disease type 1, an organ and tissue disorder;
Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase deficiency, also known as
G6PD, a red blood cell condition;
Hereditary hemochromatosis, an iron overload disorder; and
Hereditary thrombophilia, a blood clot disorder.

The FDA reviewed data for the 23andMe GHR tests through the
de novo premarket review pathway, a regulatory pathway for
novel, low-to-moderate-risk devices that are not substantially
equivalent to an already legally marketed device. Along with this
authorization, the FDA is establishing criteria, called special
controls, which clarify the agencys expectations in assuring the
tests accuracy, reliability and clinical relevance. These special
controls, when met along with general controls, provide
reasonable assurance of safety and effectiveness for these and
similar GHR tests.

In addition, the FDA intends to exempt additional 23andMe GHR

tests from the FDAs premarket review, and GHR tests from other
makers may be exempt after submitting their first premarket
notification. A proposed exemption of this kind would allow
other, similar tests to enter the market as quickly as possible and
in the least burdensome way, after a one-time FDA review.
The special controls describe the testing that 23andMe conducted
to demonstrate the performance of these tests and clarify agency
expectations for developers of other GHRs, said Dr. Shuren. By
establishing special controls and eventually, a premarket review
exemption, the FDA can provide a streamlined, flexible approach
for tests using similar technologies to enter the market while the
agency continues to help ensure that they provide accurate and
reproducible results.
Excluded from todays marketing authorization and any future,
related exemption are GHR tests that function as diagnostic tests.
Diagnostic tests are often used as the sole basis for major
treatment decisions, such as a genetic test for BRCA, for which a
positive result may lead to prophylactic (preventative) surgical
removal of breasts or ovaries.
Authorization of the 23andMe GHR tests was supported by data
from peer-reviewed, scientific literature that demonstrated a link
between specific genetic variants and each of the 10 health
conditions. The published data originated from studies that

Click here to go at the top

7
07-04-2017

compared genetic variants present in people with a specific

condition to those without that condition. The FDA also reviewed
studies, which demonstrated that 23andMe GHR tests correctly
and consistently identified variants associated with the 10
indicated conditions or diseases from a saliva sample.
The FDA requires the results of all DTC tests used for medical
purposes be communicated in a way that consumers can
understand and use. A user study showed that the 23andMe GHR
tests instructions and reports were easy to follow and understand.
The study indicated that people using the tests understood more
than 90 percent of the information presented in the reports.
Risks associated with use of the 23andMe GHR tests include false
positive findings, which can occur when a person receives a result
indicating incorrectly that he or she has a certain genetic variant,
and false negative findings that can occur when a user receives a
result indicating incorrectly that he or she does not have a certain
genetic variant. Results obtained from the tests should not be used
for diagnosis or to inform treatment decisions. Users should
consult a health care professional with questions or concerns
about results.
The FDA granted market authorization of the Personal Genome
Service GHR tests to 23andMe, Inc.
The FDA, an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services, protects the public health by assuring the safety,
effectiveness, and security of human and veterinary drugs, vaccines
and other biological products for human use, and medical devices.
The agency also is responsible for the safety and security of our
nations food supply, cosmetics, dietary supplements, products
that give off electronic radiation, and for regulating tobacco
products.
