DIRECTORATE OF OPEN AND DISTANCE
LEARNING
Distance education is predominantly learner-centred system that supports independent learning. It has evolved as one of the
effective mode of education and training for development. Its exibility and cost effectiveness are now widely recognized and
appreciated. As a result, it has been accepted as one of the effective tools for empowering those sections of the society who
could not afford to join the formal or mainstream education due to various reasons. It provides an opportunity to students for
acquiring new knowledge and skills that are needed to function in the society. Its efcacy can be judged by its potential in
reaching the un-reached. It can fecilitate upward socio-economic mobility among marginalized and excluded groups. As a
result, it has emerged as an alternative to the formal education system and even beyond to vocational and technical education.

Keeping all these under consideration, Jamia Hamdard has also been proactive in taking initiatives to of-
fer an opportunity to those who have limited access to mainstream educational system and resources. The Di-
rectorate of Open and Distance Learning (DODL) of Jamia Hamdard was established in 2004 to promote ed-
ucation through open and distance learning system. In order to cater the needs of those who need exibility and
freedom for career enhancement, DODL Jamia hamdard has introduced a number of courses. Jamia Hamdards
Study Programme under ODL are selective and customized to meet the learning requirements of knowledge seek-
ers. The DODL keeps all its educational courses, programmes and study material updated and market driven.

In order to share knowledge, experience and expertise of reputed educational institutions, DODL has identied them
as its Study and Learning Resource Centres. As a part of delivery mechanism, such centres are utilized to fecilitate ef-
fective learning. In this context, DODL utilizes the best practices in Open and Distance Learning for quality assurance.
