Subject: Electrical Drives

Total Marks: 50 Time: 2 hours
The figures in the margin indicate full marks for the questions
Use of calculator and steam table is permissible.
Assume data wherever necessary.
Answer any three Questions.

1. a) Develop an expression of the breakdown torque of an IM proving that it is independent of [7]

the rotor resistance with necessary circuit and phasor diagram?
b) Draw the speed torque characteristic of an IM and explain? [3]
2 a) A three phase SCIM drives a blower type load. No-load rotational losses are negligible. [5]
Show that the rotor current is maximum when motor runs at a slip s equals to 1/3. Find also
an expression for maximum rotor current.
b) Explain the closed loop speed control of CSI Drives? [3]
c) Enumerate the advantage and disadvantage of CSI and VSI drives? [2]
3. a) A 400V, star connected, 3 phase ,6 pole,50 Hz IM has the following parameters referred to [5]
stator : Rs Rr 1, Xs Xr 2.
For regenerative braking operation of this motor determine :
i) Maximum overhauling torque it can hold and range of speed for safe operation
ii) Speed at which it will hold an overhauling load with a torque of 100 N-m.
iii) Maximum overhauling torque the motor can hold as a ratio of maximum
overhauling torque without capacitor if a capacitive resistance of 3 is inserted in
each phase of stator.
b) Why is it necessary to operate a solar panel near the maximum power points? Explain? [5]
4. a) Write short notes on (i) battery powered vehicles (ii) solar powered pump drives [5]
b) What are the similarities between brushless dc motor and a conventional dc motor? Why it [5]
is known as a brushless dc motor? What are its advantages over a conventional dc motor?
5. a) What are the various types of synchronous motor .Derive an expression for power [5]
developed in a cylindrical-rotor synchronous motor with negligible armature resistance with
necessary circuit and phasor diagrams?
c) Damper winding has no effect on motor operation. Justify your answer? [2]
d) Closed loop control [3]
6 a) The speed range of regenerative braking of a chopper fed separately excited dc motor drive [3]

is ( Vs IaRa ) : IaRa . Prove it?

b) A dc chopper is used for regenerative braking of a separately excited dc motor. The dc [4]
supply voltage is 400 V. The motor has ra 0.2, Km 1.2V-s /rad. The average armature current
during regenerative braking is kept constant at 300A with negligible ripple. For a duty cycle of
60% for a chopper. Determine
(i) power returned to the dc supply
(ii) minimum and maximum permissible braking speeds and
(iii) Speed during regenerative braking.
c) chopper [3]
