Introducing OVMSA and OVID

May 7th, 2015

Jonathan Rushton
HSE Global Marine Adviser
OCIMF Oil Companies International Marine Forum

OCIMF was formed in April 1970 in response to the growing public

concern about marine pollution
In the early 1970s, a variety of anti-pollution initiatives were starting to
emerge nationally, regionally and internationally, but with little
coordination.
Through OCIMF, the oil industry was able to play a stronger,
coordinating role in response to these initiatives, making its
professional expertise widely available through cooperation with
governments and intergovernmental bodies.
Its remit now covers tankers, barges, offshore support vessels and
terminals and its advice extends to issues like shipping in ice and
large-scale piracy, which rarely troubled the oil industry when OCIMF
was first created in the 1970s.
OCIMF has 93 members.

Can be used by vessel operator to assess the
effectiveness of their management systems
against regulatory requirements and industry
standards
Can be used by operators to manage their
continuous improvement programmes
Can be viewed by OCIMF members only

OVID Offshore Vessel Inspection Database

The Offshore Vessel Inspection Database (OVID) is a response to a

request from OCIMF members to provide a database of offshore vessel
inspections broadly following the format of SIRE; OCIMFs inspection
protocol for oil, chemical and gas tankers that has been successfully
operating since 1998.

OVID recognizes that the offshore industry has different processes and
procedures than the tanker world for assurance and chartering which has
been taken into account.

The aim of OVID is to provide a robust web based inspection tool and
database of inspection reports; this will be underpinned with professional,
trained and accredited inspectors.

Intention is to have less vessel inspections

OVID will speed up the marine assurance assessment of a vessel during

the chartering process
