words from chairperson
25 years of inspiration, 25 years of innovation. Its been 25 years since Hong Kong Union for
Young Leaders established. For a quarter of a century, the Union nurtured countless leaders, and
allowed UYLers to discover their potential. Eventually defining their own definition of outstanding.
Here, we go beyond the simple acts of telling, explaining or demonstrating. We, as a part of this
community, inspire each other to venture the uncharted, to kindle the spark, to delineate their orbit,
and become a leader which sets sail to inspire more individuals.

We cant change the world, unless we change ourselves.

Houston Craft, a kindness advocate said, A move of your pinky can ripple through space and
time, travel millions of light-years and change the universe. More than often, people say that the
mere impacts we created on an individual is insignificant, and that we will never change the world.
Yet UYLers see otherwise, we believe that the tiny effect we created will propagate and make a
difference in our society. That is why we sing our song loud and clear, because we have faith,
because we have passion; because we are bold, because we are one.

Coruscate Through the Mist

What is a vision? A vision involves aligning others into your perspective while envisioning the future.
A vision makes a leader. Many renowned leaders today once walked in our shoes, they searched
for their definitions of outstanding, and looked up to someone as their idol. It is through envisioning
the future, and aligning others into their perspectives that makes them a leader. The power of a
vision lies beyond our imagination, it shaped the world that we are living in today. This world where
we now treat a man and a women equally. This world where we can live our lives regardless of re-
ligious beliefs. This world where we can love without concerning gender. And a vision started it all.

We have a vision. A vision to become leaders of tomorrow. As we set sail to fulfil the goal, the vision
we have shall shed light on our path, and guide us to overcome the obstacles which obstruct our
way. It is with the unwavering light that our vision radiates, allows us to sail beyond into the dark-
ness and unknown, to unearth our potential, to align and to pursue the same goal. Although there
might be times when we no longer have the passion and strength which once motivated our soul,
and our path might be blurred by the obscuring mist, the light that our vision radiates shall guide
us through the dark times, delineate our path, and coruscate through the mist to become leaders
of tomorrow.

We will become a vision. As we become leaders of tomorrow, we shall light the path of many in-
dividuals. We will inspire them to dream, to try, to conquer, and to become leaders of tomorrow,
today.

69 Weeks | 699 Thousand minutes | 40 Million seconds

It has been 486 days since I embarked on my journey. Although we might not
have grown up in the same place or led the same life, all of us have travelled the
unforeseeable path and gathered in this place where our hearts unites, and passion
kindles; this place where I found my lifelong companions, my dreams, invaluable
memories, and named it my home.

Why are you here? You are here for a reason, for a common goal, and for a bonding
no one can explain, no matter who you are a seeker, an explorer, or a passerby.

From now on, treasure every second we spend together. Before we part our ways
in the future, and walk again on separate paths composed of our own rhapsodies.

Life is a journey. We are the travellers.

This is 25. Welcome home. Ab inito-
VICE-CHAIRPERSON
HAN, Mavis Cheuk Tung
Heep Yunn School
Life could be hard sometimes. Even though were only teenagers, we do go through
different ups and downs: pressure from parents expectation, study stress from end-
less tests and exams, and our fear of disappointing people who look up to us. As
a result, we become more cowardice by time. We follow instructions and repeat the
same routine again and again. This is how a limiting life begins.

Yet, please kindly take a look at the place youre sitting in and the people around
you. Everyone is here for some REASONS. You enter this place with your OWN will
because you know that something new, something thrilling, something bigger than
your imagination is going to happen. This is a place where we make changes and
surmount obstacles, also challenge the borders of our own. This is the Union.

Whatever you do, wherever you go, never forget the very beginning of your journey
and the reason that keeps you moving on.

What do I come here for?

Hugh o brian youth
world leadership congress (hoby wlc 16)
Remarkable this is the word that I would use to describe the
unforgettable experiences in Hugh OBrian Youth Leadership
World Leadership Congress 2016 (HOBY WLC 16). Simply
a two hundred and forty hours journey has already brought
significant impacts to us, urging us to reflect on ourselves,
our roles, and our lives.

Possibilities have always been obstacles which stop us from

pursuing our dreams. We easily, very likely to surrender to
impossibility, and we always label our dreams as some-
thing that is never able to be achieved. I used to think so.
Yet, an Iraq Ambassador proved me wrong. It was nearly
impossible to visit the USA from Iraq because of the tense
and complicated relationship between them. Yet with all
odds, the Ambassador had asked numerous officials for an endorsement to join the HOBY WLC in Chica-
go for over three months before she eventually received her visa. What empowered her to hack her way
through these barriers was the pursuit of betterment of her poor and devastating community in Iraq. Her
boldness and determination has made me raise questions towards the impossibilities. She has proved
us that when there is a will, there will always be a way nothing is ever insurmountable and as long as
we believe, having faith in what we trust, we will find our path, and that is what a leader should do, just that.

This is where people got empowered. This is where leadership cultivated. This is where we excelled. If
remarkable is the word that I have chosen to describe my experiences throughout the ten days, then the
word I would choose to describe HOBY WLC would be: life-changing.

HO, Kelvin Kin Hei

Hong Kong Ambassador
HOBY WLC 16
As a participant of the Hugh O Brian World Leadership Congress
(HOBY WLC 16), I learned from their stories that foreign delegates
had gone through extremely tough situations, such as divorced
parents, incurable diseases, drug and alcohol abuse. Meanwhile,
I realised from this experience how fortunate I had been, which has
put me into deeper thoughts about the world around us.

Given that community services were highlights of HOBY, through-

out the trip we assisted different organizations to help the needy.
Ms. Diane Latiker, the founder of a non-profit organization called
Kids Off the Block, joined us and delivered an uplifting speech. In
fact, she had been spending her whole life bringing youth gangs
back to the right path by offering them accommodation in her own
house and fostering them with proper moral values. She devoted
all of herself to the teenagers and even at the expense of her marriage. Yet, she did what she considered
correct and succeeded in transforming their lives eventually; Ms. Latiker reached out to lost souls and res-
cued them from darkness. She had taken the initiative to influence others and motivate many individuals to
discover their passion and explore their value on this earth.

Know Your Why - this years theme of HOBY WLC 16 - reminded us to pursue our goals for a good
cause, and once we have discovered our passion, we should push our limits and surmount every obstacle
ahead in order to attain the goals.

Thanks to HOBY WLC 16, thanks to the stories of other ambassadors, thanks to the sharing of Ms. Diane
Latiker, I have developed a strong passion for making a change to the life of others and together with others
who have the will to share the positive vibes, trying our very best, to live HOBY.
IP, Jonas
Hong Kong Ambassador

on domestic problems faced by the respective country, then propose solutions to tackle the sug-
gested problems. The highlight of the Project, the World Congress, will be held in December.

to learn the qualities of a leader, and shape their own leadership style through the leadership-orientated
programmes.
