Middle School Mixed Choir

Time Lesson Plan for October 12, 2016 Notes

2 Beginning Activity/Warm up
Singers will warm up with singing
Bonse Aba on the syllable, do while
they move around the classroom,
walking/swaying to the macro beat
and clapping the rhythm (this will
review what they have already learned)
8 Vocal Warm ups *refer to separate sheet
music for patterns*
Octave lip trills starting in Eb
Di, Di, Di, etc.
Mi, Me, Ma, etc.
Sing chromatic scale
Applying the text
Rhythmically speak the text to the
choir and have the students repeat the
text line by line
Ask the singers to think about what the
text means and open a discussion to
the choir (If they are not sure, prompt
them to think about the mood of the
music and how it feels like a
celebration)
Read the translation of the text and
give them the context, Traditional
Zambian Folk Song
10 Putting the Pieces Together
Now that the students have learned
their notes, rhythms, and text, and
understanding of the piece, have the
group sing through with the African
words for the first time (beginning
through measure 45)
After they sing through with the music,
have them set down their music and
move around stomping/swaying to the
macro beat, while singing the through
measure 45 with text (Since the lyrics
are short and repetitive, the words will
be projected on the board so that the
students may reference them)
8 Note Review
Sing through pick up to measure 26-58
of Why We Sing
This beginning section is a piece that
they are familiar with and they should
sound confident
Have them sing from measure 26 again
to lock it in
2 Things to Consider
Ask the choir what they felt went well
in the rehearsal, and what they feel
that they can improve upon
Ask the students to consider what
makes Bonse Aba and Why We Sing
similar (A theme of joy and celebration
of music is displayed in these 2
different languages and styles)
Encourage them to come to the next
rehearsal with all notes learned for
Why We Sing
