2 Beginning Activity/Warm up Singers will warm up with singing Bonse Aba on the syllable, do while they move around the classroom, walking/swaying to the macro beat and clapping the rhythm (this will review what they have already learned) 8 Vocal Warm ups *refer to separate sheet music for patterns* Octave lip trills starting in Eb Di, Di, Di, etc. Mi, Me, Ma, etc. Sing chromatic scale Applying the text Rhythmically speak the text to the choir and have the students repeat the text line by line Ask the singers to think about what the text means and open a discussion to the choir (If they are not sure, prompt them to think about the mood of the music and how it feels like a celebration) Read the translation of the text and give them the context, Traditional Zambian Folk Song 10 Putting the Pieces Together Now that the students have learned their notes, rhythms, and text, and understanding of the piece, have the group sing through with the African words for the first time (beginning through measure 45) After they sing through with the music, have them set down their music and move around stomping/swaying to the macro beat, while singing the through measure 45 with text (Since the lyrics are short and repetitive, the words will be projected on the board so that the students may reference them) 8 Note Review Sing through pick up to measure 26-58 of Why We Sing This beginning section is a piece that they are familiar with and they should sound confident Have them sing from measure 26 again to lock it in 2 Things to Consider Ask the choir what they felt went well in the rehearsal, and what they feel that they can improve upon Ask the students to consider what makes Bonse Aba and Why We Sing similar (A theme of joy and celebration of music is displayed in these 2 different languages and styles) Encourage them to come to the next rehearsal with all notes learned for Why We Sing
