Electrophysiology Study

Cardiac electrophysiology (EP) is a test performed to study the electrical system of the heart. It
is used to understand the cause of the heart rhythm disorders and narrow down on the best
treatment for the problem. Our heart is charged with moving 4,300 gallons of blood every day
through the intricate vascular network of the body. Although pumping of blood is the major
function of the heart, each and every one of the 100,000 beats generated daily is initiated and
finely regulated by the electrical impulses that originate in the heart itself.

When a person has irregular heart beat, doctors use Electrophysiology to find out the reason.
Usually electrical signals travel through the heart in a regular pattern. In certain heart conditions
or diseases like heart attack and high blood pressure or upon aging, the heart may get
damaged, resulting in irregular heartbeats. Extra abnormal electrical pathways seen in certain
congenital heart defects can also lead to arrhythmias.

During an electrophysiology test, doctors insert a thin tube called a catheter into a blood vessel
that leads to your heart. The electrode catheter, which is specially designed for EP study
procedure, makes it possible for them to send electrical signals to the heart and record its
electrical activity. Doctors use electrophysiology study to learn the following:

Where an arrhythmia is coming from.

How well a particular medicine works to treat your Arrhythmia?
Whether the condition should be treated using catheter ablation.
To check if a pacemaker or implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is required.
To check whether the patient is at risk for heart problems or problems like fainting
or sudden cardiac death due to cardiac arrest.

The EP study procedure involves placing 3 to 5 electrically sensitive catheters in the heart to
record the electrical activity during electrophysiology test. Electrophysiology study in India is
performed at many hospitals but it is best to undergo Cardiac electrophysiology only at the best
cardiac care centers as there are few serious risks involved in EPS such as:

It is possible that one has abnormal heart rhythms during the electrophysiology
test. In such a case, the doctor might give an electric shock to the heart in an attempt to
bring back a regular heartbeat.
It is possible that blood clots get formed at the tip of the catheter, break off and
block a blood vessel. In such a situation, the doctor may prescribe medicines to prevent
blood clots.
There are also chances of infection, bleeding and bruising at the site where the
catheter went in (groin, arm or neck). The doctor attempts to avoid these problems, as
well.
