Assignment 5
1. For each of the transfer functions shown below, find the locations of the poles and zeros, plot
them on the s-plane, and then write an expression for the general form of the step response
without solving for the inverse Laplace transform. State the nature of each response
(overdamped, underdamped, and so on).

2. For each of the second-order systems that follow, find ; n; Ts; Tp; Tr, and %OS.

3. For each pair of second-order system specifications that follow, find the location of the second-
order pair of poles.
4. For the system shown in Figure, a step torque is applied at 1(t). Find
a. The transfer function, G(s) = 2(s)/T(s).
b. The percent overshoot, settling time, and peak time for 2(t).

5. A system is represented by the state and output equations that follow. Without solving the
state equation, find
a. the characteristic equation;
b. the poles of the system

6. A human responds to a visual cue with a physical response, as shown in Figure. The transfer
function that relates the output physical response, P(s), to the input visual command, V(s), is

Do the following:
a. Evaluate the output response for a unit step input using the Laplace transform.
b. Represent the transfer function in state space.
c. Use MATLAB to simulate the system and obtain a plot of the step response.
7. Reduce the system shown in Figure to a single transfer function, T(s) = C(s)/R(s).

8. Find the transfer function, T(s) = C(s)/R(s).for the system shown in Figure. Use the following
methods:
a. Block diagram reduction
b. MATLAB. Use the following transfer functions:

Hint: Use the append and connect commands in MATLABs Control System Toolbox.
9. Reduce the block diagram shown in Figure to a single transfer function, T(s) = C(s)/R(s)

10. For the system shown in Figure, find the poles of the closed-loop transfer function, T(s) =
C(s)/R(s).

11. A motor and generator are set up to drive a load as shown in Figure. If the generator output
voltage is eg(t)=Kfif(t), where if(t) is the generators field current, find the transfer function
G(s) = 0(s)/Ei(s). For the generator, Kf = 2 ohm. For the motor, Kt = 1N-m/A, and Kb = 1V-
s/rad.
