Introduction (Essential Question): Students will review a variety of skills to prepare for their tests including
Cause and Effect, Compare and Contrast, and Inferences.

Standard: English Language Arts

Cluster: Reading
Objective:
ELA.4.12
Compare and contrast a firsthand and secondhand account of the same event or topic;
describe the differences in the focus and information provided in these informational
texts.
ELA.4.1
Refer to details and examples in a literary text when explaining what the text says
explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
ELA.4.11
Describe the overall structure (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, or
problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in all or part of an
informational text.

Specific Objective: By the end of the lesson students will be able to identify the cause and
effects as found in the Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day with
100% accuracy. Students will be able to compare and contrast two pieces of text with 100%
accuracy. Students will be able to abbreviate words with 100% accuracy.

Method(s): The teacher will begin the lesson by reviewing the vocabulary and spelling words with the
students. They will take a spelling pre-test. They will then begin to discuss cause and effect. The teacher will
read the book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day and they will then discuss it.
The teacher will also review inferences as the book is read. Students will complete a graphic organizer to
illustrate cause and effect from the story.

Materials: spelling/vocabulary words, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,
graphic organizer, Cause and Effect Flashcards, Synonym Bingo, Great Ladies in History to Compare/Contrast,
Synonym Bingo, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie
Direct Instruction: The teacher will review the vocabulary words with the students. The teacher will review
cause and effect and give examples. The teacher will review what compare and contrast mean. The teacher will
read Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day to the students. The teacher will read If
You Give a Mouse a Cookie. The teacher will also discuss inferences as the book Alexander and the Terrible,
Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day is read.

Guided Practice: Students will review their vocabulary words as a group. The students will play a Cause and
Effect game in two teams. The students will play synonym bingo as well. The students will discuss and answer
questions about the two books.

Differentiation: The auditory learners will hear the discussion of cause and effect, comparing contrasting, and
inferences. The visual learners will see the teacher model how to complete the graphic organizer. The
kinesthetic learners will play bingo and complete the word search puzzle.

Lesson Closure: The teacher will review what compare and contrast mean. The teacher will also review cause
and effect with the students.

Independent Practice: Students will complete a word search puzzle containing their spelling words. Students
will complete a graphic organizer of cause and effects from the story Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, NO
Good, Very Bad Day. Students will also read the passages about Great Ladies in History to practice the
compare and contrast skill.

Assessment: Students will be assessed on their ability to identify the cause and effects from the story
Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. Students must identify at least 4 cause and
effect relationships from the story to complete the graphic organizer and achieve a passing grade.

Time & Resources: The first 10 minutes will be to review vocabulary words. The next 10 minutes will be for
students to complete a word search puzzle to review their spelling words. The next 15 minutes will be to read
the book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. The next 10-15 minutes will be for
students to complete the graphic organizer on cause and effect for the story. Students will then be divided into 2
teams and play against each other with the cause and effect flashcards for the next 15 minutes. The next 10
minutes will be for the students to read 2 passages to compare and contrast independently. The next 15 minutes
will be to play synonym bingo as a review. If time allows, the teacher will read If You Give a Mouse a
Cookie as a cause and effect review to discuss with the students as well.

Reflection: The lesson went well. The students enjoyed listening to Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No
Good, Very Bad Day and did well with identifying the cause and effect examples from the story. The crossword
puzzle had an error so we were not able to complete it with todays lesson. I plan to correct it and use it tomorrow.
The students also enjoyed playing in teams with the cause and effect flashcards. They used a buzzer and started with
their hands behind their backs. For the most part students were able to answer correctly. The students also enjoyed
listening to If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. They wanted to take notes for the organizer as the Alexander story was
read. Next time I would read the story once and then give out the graphic organizer. They seemed more focused on
completing it than listening to the story as a whole. I could also incorporate technology next time by letting them
listen to the story the second time as they are completing the organizer. I overplanned with this lesson and we ran
out of time to review comparing and contrasting. We did however complete the identifying details activity with
pictures of fish. The students were divided into 6 groups. Each group was given a picture of a fish. They were to
then write down the details of the fish. Once they were finished they read the list of details and students from other
groups tried to identify the fish as described. Some groups failed to hide their pictures, so next time I would have the
groups divided and blockers up before distributing the pictures.
