Daily Lesson Plan/Learning Guide for Day 6

Course, Unit Theme and Grade: 7th Grade Science - Heredity

NGSS: MS-LS3-1 (LS3-B)
Standard and Objective:
NGSS: MS-LS3-2 (LS3-A)
Understanding the past allows us to predict our future.
Understanding(s) for the day:
We are much more alike than it may seem.
Do structures determine ability?
Essential Question(s) for the day:
Are we defined by our genetics?
Student's will be able to relate to their own lives by considering the types of traits
within their families and pets. They will be able to better identify where certain traits
How do you anticipate activities, materials of theirs came from that they cannot directly see in their parents. Logical-
etc. connect to students prior knowledge? mathematical intelligences will be used as well as intrapersonal intelligence in
(academic, interests, learning styles, reflection on their own traits.
motivation, Funds of Knowledge)

Daily Assessments: Daily opener will show student's knowledge of using punnet squares and determining
(formative and/or summative) genotype.
Incredibles Blood Typing WS will show undesrtanding of tracking genotype
backwards through generations.

Exit Ticket: Determine types of inheritance.

Learning Activities: (10 minutes) Class opener - Questions to review Punnett Squares and spark interest in
(Include description and time frame for each inheritance.
activity) Questions: (1)If a guinea pig offspring has long hair (which is recessive),
what are the possible genotypes of its parents? Create a punnett square
for each possible combination. (2) As you created your Monsters, each
allele coded for two possibilities, is this a realistic way to look at all
genetics? (3) Suppose you had 2 quarters, 2 dimes, and 2 nickels, how
many possible combinations of 2 coins could you make?

(20 minutes) Notes about different types of inheritance (incomplete dominance, co-
dominance, polygenic inheritance, multiple alleles) using images to show phenotypes
expressed by them - ex. Blood type. Use colored dyes and beads to represent the
difference between co-dominance and incomplete dominance.
(20 minutes) Incredibles blood typing complex inheritance WS. Students, given
childrens blood genotypes, need to figure out the parents genotypes and ideal mates
genotypes for specific outcomes.
**Fast Finishers can use their Chromebooks to go online and play the blood typing
game.
(10 minutes) Exit ticket with questions and models about the various types of
inheritance beyond Mendelian Inheritance.
Struggling learners will be paired with average and accelerated learners to allow them
peer assistance on the Incredibles WS.
Accommodations made for struggling and
accelerated learners:
(grouping patterns, content literacy Accelerated learners can use their Chromebooks to go online and play the blood
strategies, etc.) typing game.

How has the prior day's assessment shaped Students have now gotten a great deal of practice with Punnett Squares, but for the
your instruction. Punnett Squares they've been using, they know the parents genotypes to start with.
Now I want them to have to figure out genotypes based on information given. In
learning about complex inheritance patterns, practicing Punnett Squares (which they
are familiar with) should help them to recognize that it is not always a black and
white answer when it comes to genetics.
