Identifying Acids and Alkalis (Bases)

Objective: Identify whether a solution is acidic or based on the results of the litmus

paper test.

Materials:

14 red and blue litmus paper 14 test tubes 20 ml Lemon Juice

20ml Orange Juice 1 aspirin Tablet 1 Alka Seltzer tablet

20 ml shampoo 20 ml conditioner 20 ml tap water

20 ml distilled water 20 ml vinegar 20 ml body lotion

Soap bar 20 ml rubbing alcohol 20 ml coffee 20ml Perfume

Procedure:

1. If applicable, make a solution of all the substances that you will be testing. For

example, aspirin should be dissolved first in distilled water before you can test

whether its alkaline or acidic.

2. Place the 14 solutions in appropriate labeled test tubes

3. Based on the physical characteristics, predict whether the substance that you

can test is an acid or an alkali. Write your predictions in table 3.8.

4. Use blue and red litmus paper strips to determine whether the substance is an

acid, alkali, or neutral. Dip a stirring rod into the solution in the test tube. Then

transfer one or two drops of the solution into a strip of litmus paper.

Note: Do not let the solution get in contact with your skin.
